I just saw this, this past weekend (had to babysit my soon to be nieces, and so they decided to rent this for them). I expected what I thought would be another ho-hum kid's movie, what with Robin Williams (say what you will about him and drama, but I still think of him as big, blue, and living in a lamp)voicing four or five characters (don't quote me on that number).
That's not what I got. There's a plain reason this film won Best Animated Picture this year, and it's evident. The acting is great, I finally have proof that Brittany Murphy can sing (who'da thunk?), the story is actually deep for a change, and the animation is top notch. I could go on and on, but, assuming people here have seen it, I'll digress. But, one last thing I will mention is this:
Being that this is a jukebox musical, one can also judge what songs they use in such a mix. Now, I've gotta hand it to them, they really did a great job on this.I mean, look at the artists! You've got Prince (and one of his more "Dirty Mind" style songs, which I ain't complaining about), Elvis, and Queen(!) But the most surprising addition here was Earth, Wind and Fire. I mean, "Boogie Wonderland" is a great funk song, and since I saw Sweetback I've liked these guys alot. So, imagine the look on my face("Unca' Jeff, what's wrong with your face?")when "Boogie Wonderland" started playing! This is the most evident part where you can tell that Brittany Murphy can really sing.
Now, I wasn't too hot on how they covered "Somebody to Love," but I can forgive that. I couldn't even tell what they were singing, so it didn't really register with me that that was Queen until after the fact.
I'm kind of wondering what age group they really intended this for. I mean, look, you've got Prince's "Kiss," "Let's Talk About Sex," and "Let's Make Love" all sung by penguins, in some way. Then, you've got that scene in the zoo, with the hallucinations...not to mention the various other film references throughout. Most of this stuff goes over little kid's heads, but it was there for somebody. Eh, I'll figure it out later. I enjoyed it.
This is a great film; and when I get the chance I'm gonna go out and buy my own copy. Good stuff.

twas pretty good. Its weakest point had to be the antagonists which at first was simply that the penguin couldn't get a girlfriend because he couldn't sing. Pretty weak stuff. Then switched over to a plot about something involving loss of fish. So it became muddled towards the end and the resolution wasn't very satisfying since the penguin really didn't get any reward beyond recognition that dancing's ok. I guess there's some sort of propoganda in there that some reviews have mentioned too. The most obvious agenda driven part was the polution causing love lace to nearly die.

I can see the points you're makin,' Wesyeed, all except the ending. Now, it was kind of rushed, that I can agree to. But, there was more going on than that. They got their fish back, which was a main conclusion to a plot thread that was running pretty much throughout the whole film.

And, really, who can't use a happy ending some of the time? Least he gets the girl in the end.

He got her? I thought she moved on to some other penguin. I remember feeling pretty sad for the guy since he didn't get her, but maybe I fell asleep or something. What I remember scatching my head at was the part where the girl penguin refuses to go with simba. I didn't completely understand why she wouldn't just run away with him.

Ah there it is. Great animation.

Yeah, I was a litttle miffed about bambi having to accept that his gal was with someone else. From that clip it's pretty clear to me he doesn't get her, but he probably stayed good friends with her... or just mated with her next mating season.

Umm... that clip there shows them pretty much inseperable from the moment he returns. She doesn't leave his side or dance with anyone else, even when he goes to see his family...

Yeah...

Great movie.

Again, true. When I said that last night I was tired and I wanted to go to bed...I'm more in tune with what this guy is saying. ^

This movie was absolutely fantastic- I was so worried the annual Pixar tripe would win the award, but luckily this won out. Great in every way.

Well, I gave in, sort of. Some woman was selling bootleg DVD's (really low budget Roxio stuff - only plays on those DVD players that play the DVIX and XVID codec - which, luckily I have, but eh) for a buck, so I picked up a few. Among which were "The Departed," "George Carlin: Carlin on Campus," and "Happy Feet."
"The Departed" looks okay. It's a keeper. "Carlin on Campus" is the same quality as when it runs on Comedy Central, so whatever. But, "Happy Feet" looked like a piece of crap. It was the same quality as that V for Vendetta rip that was running before the film's release - - blurry, faded, and out of focus. It wasn't even a telesync rip like the other two! Jeez! I know I'm getting worked up over something stupid, but even I know when someone just isn't trying, even when they're doing something "illegal" (quote unquote). Try more, old Spanish lady with mustache.
So, I'm going to Kroger later to pick up the actual thing, sue me. Working sucks, but the paychecks ain't bad.

I was pleasantly suprised by this movie when i saw it at the theater, it turned out to be last year's best animated movie and the soundtrack was very good as well.

It was funny, touching and meaningful! a must see.

Starbucks was selling the DVD,I left it.
Doesn't seem right buying my movies from them.

This movie had some really :whatever:  :wow:  moments. I found the whole Lovelace harem thing pretty  I know it's a kid's movie the whole hispanic peguins things was pretty wow. It had some funny momments to.

Was I the only one disturbed with Lovelace choking on the plastic on his neck while they were walking?

I thought it was just okay. But then again I'm not a huge fan of animated movies like that.
