I just saw this, this past weekend (had to babysit my soon to be nieces, and so they decided to rent this for them). I expected what I thought would be another ho-hum kid's movie, what with Robin Williams (say what you will about him and drama, but I still think of him as big, blue, and living in a lamp)voicing four or five characters (don't quote me on that number).
That's not what I got. There's a plain reason this film won Best Animated Picture this year, and it's evident. The acting is great, I finally have proof that Brittany Murphy can sing (who'da thunk?), the story is actually deep for a change, and the animation is top notch. I could go on and on, but, assuming people here have seen it, I'll digress. But, one last thing I will mention is this:
Being that this is a jukebox musical, one can also judge what songs they use in such a mix. Now, I've gotta hand it to them, they really did a great job on this.I mean, look at the artists! You've got Prince (and one of his more "Dirty Mind" style songs, which I ain't complaining about), Elvis, and Queen(!) But the most surprising addition here was Earth, Wind and Fire. I mean, "Boogie Wonderland" is a great funk song, and since I saw Sweetback I've liked these guys alot. So, imagine the look on my face("Unca' Jeff, what's wrong with your face?")when "Boogie Wonderland" started playing! This is the most evident part where you can tell that Brittany Murphy can really sing.
Now, I wasn't too hot on how they covered "Somebody to Love," but I can forgive that. I couldn't even tell what they were singing, so it didn't really register with me that that was Queen until after the fact.
I'm kind of wondering what age group they really intended this for. I mean, look, you've got Prince's "Kiss," "Let's Talk About Sex," and "Let's Make Love" all sung by penguins, in some way. Then, you've got that scene in the zoo, with the hallucinations...not to mention the various other film references throughout. Most of this stuff goes over little kid's heads, but it was there for somebody. Eh, I'll figure it out later. I enjoyed it.
This is a great film; and when I get the chance I'm gonna go out and buy my own copy. Good stuff.
