Comedy HBO's The Righteous Gemstones

Was about to fall to pieces, but then I remembered that McBride designed Vice Principals to go only two seasons so I guess this was a gift.

I'll certainly miss it but 4 seasons seems to be a sweet spot for HBO shows. Succession and Barry come to mind, also McBride's own Eastbound & Down. I also wouldn't be surprised if The White Lotus ends after season 4 because I'm not sure how much juice you can squeeze out of a "destination resort where someone dies" concept for an extended amount of time.

Well, the show hasn't had a bad episode or season, so at least we know this ahead of time and the show no doubt gets to end on its own terms.

But man, really seems like a lot of great shows are or will be ending. Succession and Barry bowed out in May 2023, Curb Your Enthusiasm ended last April. HBO cancelled The Franchise (which I did like, even though not a lot of people knew about it). I know the network has House of the Dragon, Dune Prophecy, and The Penguin, so they're fine on the drama front, but it feels like they're running out of comedies.

It does seem like they’re working to replenish their comedy slate, though. New shows from Rachel Sennott, Tim Robinson, Steve Carrell/Bill Lawrence, with Bill Hader and Molly Shannon having things in development too. McBride and Edi Patterson are working on adapting a Grady Hendrix book too and I assume that’s meant to be a comedy.

Oh god, the costuming in the teaser is....amazing. Florida man Eli. Whatever flight attendent get up the kids have.

BJ doing pole dancing is going to be great.

Teenjus, good lord.

A reminder that I need to see Cast Away. And Philadelphia. At some point.

“Watching you work that pole’s got me slick.”

Dear God, Judy…

New trailer out, which I can't post for obvious reasons. But, uhh, things going to be wild.

"squirt yurts" lol

I was wondering when Paul Schneider would work with McBride and DGG again... lol

Goddammit, Instagram spoiled
Bradley Cooper
for me.

Even more of a surprise than Bradley Cooper showing up was the fact that it went on for an entire episode. I was thinking it was just going to be the cold open before the title card as a little cameo that Cooper shot for the day but I really liked that they went all out with an entire Civil War era prequel episode.

It being the whole episode actually makes me wonder if they’ll pass up on another Interlude/Aimee-Leigh episode this season.

I thought the same thing. If there is, it's possible that if it takes place in the mid-late 00s they just use McBride, Patterson and Devine playing younger versions of their characters but with how the season opened, I'm not expecting another one. I'd be happy if there is though.

I've been rewatching the series because I haven't watched seasons 1-3 since they aired and I noticed a hilarious easter egg in Interlude II (Season 2, Episode 5) that I didn't catch before. During the Christmas morning scene where Aimee-Leigh and Eli confront Baby Billy about abandoning his kid, you can clearly see a John Goodman Fred Flintstone doll right there next to Eli.

Love the idea of immediately following up that relatively straight-laced premiere with a 1970s variety show number gone horribly wrong.

Jesus, that Luke Perry joke from Baby Billy was savage.
