I see this is a direct sequel to the 80s cartoon. As someone who has never watched a single episode before, is this going to be a good jumping-on point? The art style of this show looks gorgeous, and I wanted to give it the old college try, but I get the impression that I might be missing a fair bit by starting here.

Fingers crossed it lives up to my hype and it's only five days away!!!
Uh, what? It's not 'til the 23rd, right?

Just watched the "Power of Grayskull" episode of the 2002 series. Good stuff!

This is the way with this kind of franchise where the original show was a broad audience hit but was very, very, VERY anemic in regards to... Well everything.

The toys and the comics that came with them had atmospherics that captured the imagination but were again, very rudimentary in terms of plots and character.

The 2000's show made a more than game attempt to sew the desperate parts of this mythology together and I think it worked. A shame it didn't have more support on the corporate side but the word seems to be it's ability to move product was the biggest knife in its heart but, I don't know enough if that's 100% true but I thought it was a fun quality action adventure show with some great versions of the characters from the franchise.

With someone like Smith at the helm this seems to be on a similar track of paying honor and homage to the old show and toyline while adding some layers of depth and drama to the proceedings, and so far in at least one way I think it's surpassed the 2000's show already in that this is great character design and animation already apparent in the trailers and BTS stuff we've seen so far. And that's saying something. While not up to some of the other shows of it's time (Think AVATAR) the Cartoon Network MOTU was more than decent in how the characters looked and moved and the first season especially has some awesome fight sequences that were leagues ahead of the previous MOTU series. So here, this looks already like it's close to or at the level of something like Avatar/Korra in regards to the animation.

Fingers crossed it lives up to my hype and it's only five days away!!!

I thought it was dropping on July 23. Did they move up the release date?

Yeah, I misread something and thought it was dropping on the 7th.

So happy you liked the Grayskull ep flick.

I remember seeing it when it originally aired and was like "Man... The creators really turned a sow's ear into a silk purse here."

Because... MOTU especially the 80's show just ain't even close to Shakespeare, y'know? But they mined the continuity for gems and really did something that I think is GREAT for kids to see.

You may get differing opinions on this PC...

I wish I could tell you that you can watch AND enjoy the 80's show as an adult that didn't grow up with it but I don't know about that. You might be best off either browsing the wikis or giving the 2000's show a gander to get the bullet points of the mythos.

And as stated... The original wasn't particularly complex so while there might be some head scratching on some stuff this ain't DUNE or the like. Smart fella like you can prolly sus out relationships etc.

Well, I'm definitely not watching 130 episodes of the old show. I did that with Clone Wars and there were several points where it almost broke me mentally. I'll just wing it and see what happens.

EDIT:

OK some stuff I noticed in new trailer:

* Vikor, He-Ro, and King Grayskull. Vikor being animated for first time, and same for He-Ro as far as I know
* The Three Towers of Eternia make an appearance, that's a really deep cut
* Eternia being the center of the Universe, referenced in the minicomics.

Any questions hit me up with a PM.

Yeah, that tracks because as much as I loved the original series, I don't imagine that it holds up all that well for some of the reasons you mentioned above. What's more, we're talking about 130 episodes, right? That's a ****load of media consumption, especially if you're just looking to get caught up on the basics! But as relates to the new show, I'm liking how K. Smith had the common sense to make practical changes here and there. For one thing, he opted to give Prince Adam a slighter physique than that of his alter ego, the big H. And this is something of a spoiler—so I won't ruin it for you—but let's just say that some of the supporting characters come off a lot smarter than their '80s counterparts did.

If its a direct sequel to the original series…will we get a moral speech at the end of each episode?

People already losing their **** over this whining about it being political dreck, imagine the reaction to those little speeches in each episode.
Because for some god damn reason, the idiots somehow forgot that even He-Man was what nowadays is considered "political" back in the day.

Anyway...the new trailer is so god damn cool, im really hyped for this.

Giving the women extra muscle is the only way I believe any of them being able to go against, and perhaps even match, any of the male characters. Making them skinny supermodels in this universe would, ironically, be the more unrealistic choice. It’s already a Frazetta-esque, hyper-fantasy sci-fi world, where all of the good guys and bad guys have juiced-up, unrealistic action-figure proportioned bodies, so I don’t see why the female characters can’t get the same treatment. And as someone who’s also into that sort of thing, I certainly can’t complain. :cwink:

Also, in regards to Teela, her skin color in this show matches her original action figure, so that’s a nice touch.

I mean, various types of looks and sizes exist for men, and hardly anybody makes a fuss about that. But, give a woman a strong jaw and some muscles, and these roaches scream “cRosS dReSseR REEEEEEEEEE!!1!!”.

I mean, god forbid women possess varying physical traits that don’t conform to inaccurate, outdated and traditionally-accepted standards of Western feminine beauty or some incels’ image of of their favorite waifus.

I searched YT for reactions to the trailer and far too many were from the "usual suspects"... And you just know they are going to be so wrong.
