Yeah.. I bought my new one.. It's not as pretty as my old one, I might still send mine in to Sony, just to get my HDD data saved.. Or will they delete it??
I took that beast apart, will they still fix it if I pay them???
I hear they do format the HDD if necesay. Theres no guarantee that they wont. I also hear that they wont touch it if theres evidence of modifcation or tampering. Opening it up probably might not have been the best idea

Regarding your HDD(trust me, i asked them about just letting me keep the hard drive) THEY DO NOT AND WILL NOT GIVE YOU BACK YOUR OLD HARD DRIVE! and you MUST included it when you send it in otherwise they won't repair it. Also...if you broke any seal that says something to the effect of "breaking this seal will void warranty" then you are probably SOL. In any case, your best resource for all your questions is to call Sony and ask them.
It doesn't say they won't fix it IF YOU PAY, if it's broken..
That's lame, you're paying them to fix it... My warranty went out of date... I think 26 days ago, :P and then it broke a few days ago.. So, I didn't think it was a big deal to VOID the already out of warranty.. warranty.
They will fix it. The warranty seal is only for consoles in warranty.
BTW, Iv been using my old PS3 the past 2 days, trying to get a YLOD, but it hasnt done so yet. I think Im going to keep it and call Sony up today to cancel my service request. I hear they will still charge me for teh shipping cost but I can deal with that
