My laptop was working fine all day yesterday until 2am. I was working on my paper when I got up to get a drink, and when I returned, my screen had gray-ish looking waves all over. I assume my computer crashed...

So now, my laptop refuses to boot. At this point, I am aware that it is basically a salvage misson but it is possible to really retrieve ALL my personal data? I'm planning on buying an external hard drive but will it make a difference? Any advice?

First check to see if it was your screen that went out on your laptop, does it have any ports on it to hook it up to an external monitor? Buy an external hard drive enclosure & put your laptops hard drive in it & then plug it into another computers usb port to see if the hard drive still has any files on it.
