high school freshman arrested after taking homemade clock to school

And the ****storm keeps'a rollin'...

Yeah, the money is gonna put him in a worse light unfortunately.

Seems incredibly excessive. But hey, you can't blame them for trying to milk this for everything it's worth.

Nothing seems to scare establishments more than the loss of money.

I don't think asking 15mil for being wrongfully accused of terrorism and arrested based on race and ethnicity is excessive.

I think given the circumstances behind this that asking $15 million is excessive. The main reason for that is they gladly took up roots to move to Qatar and then found they didn't like it. Now they want to move back to Texas and they want a nice comfy financial cushion to do so.

An apology and some financial restitution is fine. They left the country, found it really is better where they were and now on the face of it demanding their moving expense and a new house be paid on top of that does not sit well with me.

The family is demanding an apology from Van Duyne and others involved because they would like to return to Irving, attorney Kelly Hollingsworth said.

“Qatar is nice, but it is not Texas. That is their attitude toward this,” Hollingsworth said. “They are citizens of Irving, Texas, USA, first. Are they devout people devoted to their faith? Absolutely. But they are Texans, too, and they want to come home. What we are seeking is for them to be able to do that with their heads held high.”

I think it's a scumbag move.

I was on his side at first, but after reading up on him and his family... nah.

Surely you jest? There are people who have been wrongfully imprisoned for several years that don't get that payout. Are you saying everyone who is wrongfully arrested based on their race and ethnicity should be allowed to ask for $15m in compensation? Or are you saying it should be allowed in this case because it got so much press?

News flash, there are hundreds of incidents a year probably significantly worse than this that get zero press, surely some of those people "deserve" $15m a lot sooner than this kid?

Every Muslim that's ever been "randomly searched" at an airport deserves like $5m, every time a black male gets wrongfully pulled over and has his car searched should be about $10m, etc, etc. You'll bankrupt the entire country if every case of stereotyping gets millions of dollars as recompense.

I hope this scammer doesn't get a cent. They knew what they were doing, they knew what kind of reactions they would get, he got warned about putting the clock away.

The school did nothing wrong.

The kid was invited to the White House and got thousands of dollars worth of equipment from Microsoft. He does not need another cent.

And a job offer from companies like Twitter and Facebook. I'm pretty sure thousands of Americans would gladly be racially profiled and splashed all over the news for the chance to meet the president and work at one of the world's most valuable companies.

Let's put this into perspective, Eric Garner's family got about $6m in an out of court settlement, after (possibly rightfully) asking for $75m. At what point did being on the receiving end of racial profiling become the worst fate anyone has had to endure? This is so absurd it's not funny.

He left the country. They should not be given a dime of tax payer money.

lol they realized they shouldn't have left.

Yeah, that's the thing. If you look at some of their complaints it's that it damaged his long term prospects and he will forever be known as a bomb maker. I don't know what world they are living in, but they just about squashed all good will they had with moving to Qatar and now this.

Demanding their moving expense be paid? Nobody forced them to move to Qatar in the first place.

I guess I can't blame them for striking while the iron is hot. Good for them. They took advantage of right wing American ignorance and left wing American naivete.

This looks even more ridiculous to me in light of the events in Paris. Did the school and authorities handle the situation badly? **** yes, they handled it like idiots. Is reacting with suspicion and panic to something that looks like it may be bomb unreasonable? Uhm, in the North American and European climate post 9/11...**** no.

Also, absolutely nothing can damage anyone's long term prospects permanently. You've got people like Michael Jackson or OJ Simpson that were welcomed back into society quite easily after they were pretty much known for being criminals. This kid is painted as the victim in the scenario and he became an overnight meme, if anything his prospects were improved exclusively from the press he got.

Hell, he's so popular there are people posting on the internet in random forums about how he deserves $15m for the inconvenience of becoming a celebrity with worldwide sympathy and admiration.

This is sounding like another octo-mom/balloon-dad situation of a parent coming up with a stunt involving their kids so they can become rich and famous. This time it worked and and they can't get enough so they will milk it for years to come if they can. I won't be surprised if next we hear their working with TLC or some other channel to set up a reality show.

If you leave America and then come back because the other place sucked worse....yeah, you were just talking ****.

18 Clocks and Counting?

and now the true motivation behind this incident, stunt or whatever you want to call it comes out.

hope the kid doesn't get a cent.

I have zero sympathy for him now.
