Does it really make a difference to the movie watching experience? I'm looking to buy a 5.1 dolby digital system. Also doesanyone know what the diffrence is between an actve or passive subwoofer?

Yes, if you get a good one it will blow your mind.

A passive subwoofer comprises a cabinet loaded with a driver and no electronics. An active subwoofer is the most common of the two. It is a self-contained powered system that has the addition of its own amplifier, and generally comes in two types of cabinet, namely sealed or ported. A sealed box tends to have a tighter, faster bass response, whilst a ported cabinet usually offers a higher SPL (Sound Pressure Level) and a lower frequency output.

Google is your friend

I just got a $200 system about a month and a half ago, and even that changed the way I watched movies and played games. It's definitely worth it.

Mine is amazing! And it only costs $80-$90! 4 corner speakers, 1 L&R center speaker and a subwoofer. Also the speakers are wall mountable. It comes with Matrix mode for making games and simple Mono or 2 speaker sound into surround sound. It hooks up to games, dvd players, tvs, computers, mp3 players and even your gameboy! It also comes with a computer to standard AV L and R output. Here's what it looks like:

Each speaker has 2 emulators but the center L-R speaker has 4.

That looks really crappy. :csad:
