Hotshot creators that you're just not into.

Okay first off...no. second off read his Daredevil, Big guy and rusty, Hard Boiled, Ronin, and 300. And if you still don't like his work then go read those boring superman comics(where creativity goes to die).
I've read his DD, it left me with deadly case of the Meh's. 300 is alright, but nothing spectacular. Same with Sin City. I absolutely despise his Batman and can name dozens of writers who get the character much better than Miller. When I read his Batman it leaves me feeling that under the mask is not Bruce Wayne, but Hartigan or Marv. Batman should not be a crude Sin Cityesque anti-hero. But I'll admit that I have not read Big Guy & Rusty, Hard Boiled, or Ronin, but for much the same reason I won't read anything drawn by Rob Liefeld, both creaters leave a bad taste in my mouth. Like expunged vomit.

I liked Miller's Year One interpretation of Batman. The others, not so much.

Even Year One was a better Jim Gordon story than a Batman story.

That's true, actually. I loved and hated Jim more than I ever had before when I read that series.

Actually he doesn't draw BG & R or Hard Boiled. And His art in Ronin is very different..

Okay sorry, didn't mean AS Superman. I love that title. I meant the lame supe stories like Emperor Joker an pretty much all his monthlys.

I'll give you Emperor Joker; that was pretty lame. But I've been digging Johns' run on Action more or less the whole time.

More to the point of the thread, Superman can be godawful when a bad writer is behind him, just as easily as Batman or Hulk or anyone can be. Some of the best stories I've ever read were focused around "lame" characters like Ralph Dibny or Aquaman, while guys like Wolverine have been used in some of the most unreadable dreck I've seen. There's no such thing as a 'good' or 'bad' character--it all depends on the writer. And as I said, I don't think that Frank Miller is a good writer.

I have to admit I like a lot of Miller's work, mostly his artwork. I found DK Returns different but didn't really buy into it. Miller just likes to make them enemies, he mentioned something in an interview once that Supes and Bats were different that they wouldn't get along. To me that would strengthen a friendship rather than hinder it. I have lots of differing opinions with my friends yet we still get along. Basically I like his 300 and Sin City stuff, anything else not a huge fan of.

I personally thought Jim Lee was always over rated. Nothing he did seemed new and refreshing to me. McFarlane is another one I think is completely over rated. While he had some good ideas nothing really came to fruition. It's like they stalled and became mediocre and it wasn't until he had other artists and writers work on his stuff that it felt like anything decent IMO.

Not so much his comics (cause I like them) but attitude-wise, I gotta say Oeming. He's really cocky and arrogant and was very ignorant at Wizard World Chicago this year.

Bendis (like Powers, but nothing else grabbed me) not a fan of Daniel Way so much. I can go with the easy picks of Chuck Austin and Rob Leifeld. Some people I like some of their stuff some of it I love but I think they are over rated are Frank Miller, Alex Ross, Micheal Turner (RIP), and Mark Miller.

He was a hotshot, like, 15 years ago.

So were these people.

Judd Winnick..can't stand him trying to stick social consciousness into every title. Also Brian Bendis.

That was my problem. I came away from it feeling like I hadn't read a Batman story. And upon seeing Sin City, I realized that the DKR Batman was basically Marv in a cape.

Ed Brubaker

I HATED The Man Who Laughs. It was two stories that had no connection with each other and both were way too short and predictable. I was very excited to hear that they were doing a year one kind of story with The Joker but it wasn't that at all.

Man Who Laughs was a single story, the other was just put into the hardcover for...some reason or another, it escapes me. And since TMWL is Batman and Joker's first meeting in the comics (I refuse to acknowledge Lovers and Madmen over it), I would say it is indeed a Y1 type story.

Also, is TMWL the only thing of Brubaker's you've read? It's not the best indicator of his talent. I'd say that would go to Gotham Central, but that's only my opinion.

Gotham Central is a great reason to give Brubaker, Rucka, and Lark your undying love.

What'd he do/say?

He was just sitting at his Artist Alley table, no line, no nothin' and my friend asked him if he'd do a quick sketch in his book and he like cut him off and told him "Come back later with $25". And then later on that night, I was staying at the same hotel as most of the creators so we were all hanging out in the bar and we passed each other up and I just said "Hey dude", didn't even stop him, bother him or anything, just said hi like I would to anyone, and he gave me the dirtiest look and didn't say anything back and kept walking. And then later on in the bar, I was walking through with the writer and penciller of the comic I work on and some of our friends and I turned my head and I saw Oeming sitting on a lounge couch with some people and he was like following me with his eyes with a mean look on his face and then he turned to some of the people and whispered something to them. I wanted to walk over and ask him how he'd like it if I threw his little leprechaun ass through the bar.

I have to agree with those who say Frank Miller. 300 and Sin City to me are both boring, hollow examples of what's wrong with comics, and what has been for 20-25 years; being dark doesn't make something great. He has a few great Batman stories, but honestly, I fail to see what's so special about him.

Ed Brubaker is a God; I suggest you read his Captain America and Iron Fist before writing him off.
