Wow...

First bit:

An open letter from Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, creators and executive producers of “Smallville”...

As the creators of “Smallville” we look back at 7 amazing years. We look back at 152 episodes. We look back knowing that the show will continue into Season 8 without us. After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on.

The rest:

Is this good news or bad?

Discuss!

what the hell is this? There's only one more season to go and they drop out? They must have had a HUGE disagreement with WB or something.

Is this some kinda of sick twisted Joke ?

No, it looks quite serious.

And to be honest, I'm not sure it's a bad thing.

However, if they're gone then who's taking over?

They got a lot of exec producers in the credits now and Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders have doing some talking to the press lately. That hasn't really happened before.

Maybe there's already been some work toward the transition....

I don't know if this is good or not. I'm kinda scared.

I just want to know why? After seven years of all that hard work, why leave now? There's only one more season to go. Maybe Al and Miles want to work on their film writing?

There have been some complaints about the direction of the show the last couple of seasons, maybe it'll get it back on track.

I haven't had too many problems, although anything like the Stride Gum thing better not happen again.

Although, if they're leaving to focus on feature work (which was implied by the letter) then I guess there's no hope for a spin-off from Smallville, which might not be a bad thing either.

Supergirlville I'm not sure woulda been good, and unless they get a Green Arrow spin off (which doesn't look at all likely), none of the other characters would really work without Clark and I don't think Tom will sign up for a spin-off show.

He also wants to do features, no doubt.

I don't think it's about the direction of the show though. If that were the case, they should have gotten fired after season 4. I'm thinking they're leaving on their own accord due to film writing. I know they were working on the new Mummy movie. Maybe they're getting more offers now and want to focus on that.

This may make me not want to watch Season 8 I'm so very sad, hold me. Some one? Please?

Holy WTF!!!!!!

I've had really big problems with the last season, but how can they talk, talk, talk, talk about the big finale and now leave? So all that time of planning to the last episode, and someone else is gonna make it? I'm just completely shocked.

This sure came out of the left field. Did anyone see this coming? I guess this will make some people happy.

Who's replacing them now?

No, I meant the direction of the show had bothered some viewers, it clearly hadn't bothered Millar & Gough.

At least not enough for them to leave...

*shrug*

I don't know, could be a good thing. I think the show has lost some of its focus the last couple of seasons...

Could also be a bad thing, I mean who's going to care about the show as much as its creators do?

However, if Tom signed on for next season to get an exec producer credit (which is what the mom got on the last season of The Gilmore Girls), then I know he'll make sure the show ends strong.

He's had some strong ideas about the show in interviews, so I hope he's an exec producer next year but I have no idea if he is. However, my little theory about how they convinced him to sign on for another year was to dangle something like that in front of hm.....

Agreed Trip...its one thing for AlMiles to have a vision for the their creation and where its heading but its quite another if Warner Bros decides it doesn't sync up where they want SV to end.

Interesting spec you have there Trip about the possibility of Tom and the show especially since he has shown that the enjoys directing as well.

I read on another TW site that someone who is working on the set and who posts reliable info said that the decision for TW to direct #150 was made suddenly and not by AlMiles. Hmmm....

on bright side bashers will now tone down their bashing

since anmiles and gough werer main target for their bashing

who will the bash now:hehe::hehe:

the criticsims and hate i get from these fan borads if i werer them i would've quite this show

so "aftre veritas things will never be the same again"

yup that's right

Really?

That is interesting. I'd like to see that post, if you have a link to it...

I wonder if the new show runners made that decision, not Al&Miles?

Interesting indeed....

It's a huge episode and from what little I've heard about it, it sounds like a key one for Clark. It'll be a good one for him to direct, then.

Also, if Tom is interested in making sure the direction of the show stays focused, then it might make sense that he might have demanded a producing credit before he'd sign on to do another season.

I would have insisted on it, were I in his shoes.

Al and Miles leaving now accomplishes nothing.. they've already shaped the show very distinctly; whether you like the picture or not.

There isnt much room for SV to deviate from what they've already set up for the final year.

And my theory is they got a film writing deal for next year (but the CW wanted an 8th season) so they bailed.

I'm hoping for the best, but all of this leaves me feeling worried. First you have season 7, which was supposed to be the last season, but Al and Miles want to do a season 8. Now we have almost half the cast leaving Smallville, and now suddenly Gough and Millar are leaving. Its too much of a mess. If season 8 turns out as fantastic as we'd hoped, well that'll be great. But if ends up a mess, I'm gonna be uber-pissed at Gough and Millar, who decided to dink around trying to make spinoffs instead of putting their focus into the show they already had. If Tom really is someone in charge next season, I'm seriously hoping he can fix up stuff and make it great.

I just hope we'll get some detailed explanation later on because that latter doesn't explain much.

Either way I'm looking forward to who'll ever they'll hand the keys to.

Considering how gung ho G&M were for an 8th season, I'm not surprised CW expected them to do it.

They said in a Season 7 video interview once (around sept) that they'd love to end with 7 but they may not be what the network as planned.

Its interesting how that story changed. They obviously have some other project for 2008/09.

My guess is that it's going to be Brian Peterson, from reading the Sci-Fi Wire article. Some interesting stuff I highlighted.

Brian Peterson, executive producer of The CW's Smallville, told SCI FI Wire that the writers already are gearing up for the show's upcoming eighth season, thanks to an early pickup announcement.

"We're always hopeful, and we always plan every year for a season finale, but it's really great when we get to tell one more year of Clark's story," Peterson said in an interview.

"It's very early, and we really have to work in partnership with the studio, because right now we haven't presented anything to them," Peterson added with a laugh.

As for the current season, five new episodes will begin airing, starting on April 17, with the focus clearly on Lex's fall to the dark side, starting in the episode "Descent."

"The rest of this season is, for the most part, about Lex finding what he's always been looking for," Peterson said. "'Veritas' [the last original episode to air] launched the next five episodes, which are all about Lex finding what he's been searching for."

Smallville's season was interrupted by the recently settled writers' strike. "Veritas" was originally designed as an extended season finale. But it aired as an hourlong episode, with several scenes unfinished. Those scenes will now form the basis of the season's final episodes, Peterson said. "I think it's going to be nice to actually see each piece of that story, rather than have it all hit in one episode," he said.

The finale will also set up the new season. "There's so much still to play," Peterson said. "People keep asking us all the time, 'When are you bringing in this character?' 'When are you doing this?' 'When are you doing that?' And we're like, 'We'll get there.' There're a lot of characters to service. So next year we have some real fun and clear ideas about what we're doing." Smallville airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

I'm wondering if things have changed since then.

I doubt this will impact the feel of the show in the slightest to be honest.

Al/Miles arent really that pivitol.

If Brian Peterson is the new show runner, then Kelly Souders (his long time writing partner) will be one too, I can almost guarentee it.

But they've been listed as Executive Producers starting this year, they were "co-executive" producers last year....

Could be a sign that Al & Miles had been pulling back for some time. They haven't written an episode since the 4th season....

^^^ agree

lets' hope for the best and who knows whoever takes smallville for sesaon 8 may bring more supreman mythoes than almiles

and maybe even suit and flight

so think on a bright side

i think either they got fired or it is some apriul fool joke

I wouldn't mind a change in direction even this late in the game, although whoever replaces them will probably follow whatever Al & Miles had in mind.
