The manga that become movies over in Japan are a lot more faithful to the source material and are really good.

The live action Death Note movies rock.

Also, a lot of the movies based on manga in Japan are simply anime or sequels to the anime that are based on manga. And then you have things like Appleseed Dues EX Machina out in Japan now which is based on Masamune Shirow's manga series. Also Tekkonkinkreet which was based on the manga Black and White.

Going to the movies is a more formal event in Japan. Tickets comparitively cost a lot more than they do in the states. Most movie theatres in Japan show both Japanese domestic movies and also US Hollywood blockbusters which are very popular there.

That said, I think some Hollywood movies could take some hints from the Japanese comic book films. One thing being, not everything has to be live action schlock.

Box Office Mojo has a section for Japan

    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan/

As you can see Spider-Man 3 was #1 for three weeks at it appears it made over $58 million as it shows up for the last time here

    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan/?yr=2007&wk=32&p=.htm

Compared it the recent Death Note 2: The Last Name, based off the manga Death Note, which made $41 Million

    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan/?yr=2006&wk=50&p=.htm

But was number 1 for a month.

You can look through there since it goes back to 2002.
