My brother in law reformatted one we got from Walmart to use on PS3. It works, but we can't download from PSN Store cause it says not enough free room. Why isn't the DLC going to the external hard drive?

Thanks.

You cant download games/DLC to an external HDD. Thats only for video content as far as Im aware of. You can backup your PSN downloads to an external using the PS3's backup utility, but you wont be able to run them off of the HDD

So brother & I can never buy anymore DLC then, right? Or can I move saved data to the External drive and run games off there to create room for DLC on PS3 HDD???

You cannot run saved games off of an external HDD. If your PS3 HDD is full, then go to the Game Data Utility and delete some DLC or game installs of games you are not playing. Do not confuse this with Saved Data Utility. That is your game saves. Also, check and see how many demos you have DL'ed and delete the ones you never play. They can add up if you have a lot.Other than that, I suggest you upgrade your PS3 HDD if you want. It's pretty easy and the HDD's are just laptop HDD's, so they are really cheap.

Question then. If I move the Game Data of the install games to the external HDD...and just delete the ones form PS3, does that clear up room while saving the data itself? Cause if not, I really wasted buying a external HDD. Well no, I use it to back up some games, I have more saved data backed up onto the portable USB drive I have.

 also some games, lets say Saints Row the Third and um..oh gee...a few others, are picky and only say 'Back up data online.' no, I shall not...stupid game developers.

So, update, I can't copy game data to the external drive. Only save game data...

Now my brother can't play Mortal Kombat on PS3 cause of no disc space. Sony...you are losing me as a customer. Horrid idea to make PS3 with a HDD. Horrid. External HDD is **** as well.

Welcome to 2006. Including a HDD is the way of the future (welll actually current times) and one of the best new additions to consoles this gen (actually MS paved the way last gen) Why is it so difficult to just delete stuff? How big is your PS3 HDD anyway? If its a recent purchase then Im assuming you have at least a 160gb. Ive had 160gb since 2007 and I play ALOT of games. Just think that the system originally launched with 20 and 60 and they've since bumped that up considerably to 160gb and 320gb respectively. You just need to be better at managing your space and not keeping junk on their. If its that big of an issue for you, then replace it as already suggested by KALEL. Its not Sony's fault you had misinterpreations of how things work. External HDDs are merely there for backup, not actual replacement of the internal HDD

I think I got it figured out. If you delete game data, but keep the save game data, all you have to do is reinstall the game and you'll have everything back. Right?

I deleted GTA4 or some GTA game...so brother could DL two maps, one each for black ops & world at war. As for the PS3...damn...finally checked his PS3...80GB. Warranty expired, got it for him back in December of 2008 at Walmart.

Yes you can delete game data. That is what will take up most of the space as those can be around 4gb a piece depending on the game. Imk surprised you two had this system for 3 years and didnt know any of this stuff. So nothing has been deleted since then? Id really suggest you just buy a laptop HDD and stick that in there.

That game data stuff is an incredible space killer.

You have to really manage the games you're playing at the time, and keep them controlled to exactly the ones you're playing or you'll find yourself with no space at all.

Well, considering the PS3 overheats and maybe smells like burnt plastic (or something stinks in brother's room)...I'll just get him a 160 GB PS3 for $250. When I was looking at his game data..the oldest stuff was from 09/10. The 80 GB is going on 3 years old come December 23rd. Trophies are synced...I have a lot of save game data on a portable USB drive...and now of course some stuff on the external hard drive. He's on it so much, I don't even watch blu-rays anymore. I don't even play the Wii, cause I just want that TV to rest...

Oh yea, but DLC is taking up tons of space. He loves that stuff. Maps...if I had my own PS3, a actual job, I'll probably have nothing but DLC on there...and of course Black ops and world at war...for the zombie maps. And I guess Madden 12...
