How do you costumize an action figure?

that caught your attention right? so i went into a hobby store today and found 2 aisles of nothing but paint. most were acryllic (sp?) and i know those are the ones i need. i'm gonna paint a hulkbuster into a mega war machine. so i need black and a grey. so do i prime it with a white primer (they also had a grey primer) and then let that dry, and then paint? and i should probably do the grey parts first right cause the black will probably cover the grey mess ups. i have no idea what i'm doing, but that was my guess. let me know what i should do bro.

be careful with accrylics.. because you ideally want a kind thats not going to dry looking like paint... but looking like plastic, like an action-figure... i still need to buy some for my hulkling and wiccan

OK, Gouche paint, (spelling?) is not accrylic! Its water color. I asked an art store.
So don't use it on figures, just incase someone might.

I don't mind if mine dries looking like paint. Its sort of a rough draft action figure of my own character. I'm only making it for fun and after I'm done I'm done for the time being.

Well, I started my HulkBuster War Machine. All I have done so far is primer him, so he will be easy to paint.

Anyway, what I was meaning to say a primer is ideal for the paint to adhere but it isn't really necessary unless you want some help making a dark plastic turn to a light color. For instance once the ML15 Moon Knight comes out. Lets say the regular one is the black one. Well, to turn the black plastic white a primer would definitely be useful to achieve that without mounds of coats of paint. And a grey primer would be good because then you could just dry brush over the grey with white so that the grey stays in the cracks while the white covers the predominant areas.

depends on how thick the paint is... i don't recomend primer..

If the red stuff is what you want gray/silver then maybe. A gray primer would be good. Then top it with the shade of gray or silver.

Thats why you should sand first. It helps with any paint rub if you sand the points of contact.

well its not that.. its the sculpted nooks and cranny's it covers up alot of detail... (learned that from sculpting) so i'd only use primer if it was for like you said.. to paint on light colors, like white or yellow

True. But thats why you go with light coats, not globs of paint. You gotta know how to work it.

But usually that applies to everything.

What material should I use?
Is there a action figure that size that wears a cape like that?

not that i'm aware of... your best bet would be to use apoxy sculpt, and sculpt it yourself... though it would harden... or sew one and use a wire frame to shape it

umm any fabric you want..... and i dont know any tutorials.. its kinda you see it in your head kinda thing... and for cheap fabric.. well go to a fabric store lol

umm go to a craft store.. lol ull find wire u can use for framing... I'm assuming your an animation major (so am i.. and we had a sculpting class that went over this..) but just go to a craft store.. visualise it in your head.. and just figure out how you'd think it would work.. lol thats part of being an artist..
but around the styrofoam and fake flowers you should fine some wire that might work for your liking...

as for apoxy sculpt (wich you'd have to use for the mohawk) just find it in an art store.. you mix 2 types of clay together and it gives you 4 hours before it hardens (thats what apoxy sculpt is)
