Hugh did another interview to promote his new movie Deception, and at about the six minute mark he mentions Wolverine and - he was asked if was set "17 years in the past" and he answered that the other XMen movies said "the not too distant future" and this one is "the not too distant past." He also said it deals with Weapon X.

I'm glad there trying to make it darker here and they should. Wolverine is a very dark comic book series.
