Hype Movie Club

Will be starting my own 1990's movie journey this weekend, but wow did this month fly by, because it's already time for the next decade! I'd hate to become too predictable with the decade choices, so instead of naming a decade we've not yet done for my birthday month of October, I'm bringing back my birth decade,

The 1980's!

Nominations are now open, and will be until Tuesday. Up to 3 nominations as usual. Also, as this is the first repeat decade we've done, for those with short memories, the movies from this decade we did last time which are therefore now ineligible are Raging Bull, The Lost Boys, and The Indiana Jones series.

80s theme? And it's October? You KNOW it's gotta be horror. And I'm picking my favorites.

My nominations:

The Thing (1982)
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Ah the '80's. Golden Age for two of my favourite horror genres: slashers and vampires :hehe:

And because it's October I'm obviously gonna go with horror selections. How to pick just three?? I'll try my best...

Friday the 13th Series (first 8 entries only)

My all-time favourite slasher franchise. These films may not be the 'best' the genre has to offer - not one of them even approaches Carpenter's OG Halloween - but for sheer fun and consistency the Friday movies can't be beat. Plus I have access to all of them on Paramount Plus so this is as good a time as any to revist them :D

Near Dark (1987)

Yes I nominated this one the last time we did the '80's but it deserves another chance. A much more intense and effective variation on The Lost Boys' themes, this one hasn't gained quite as much cult traction as the former which is a shame. Releasing Near Dark (an independent film) almost simultaneously to WB's Lost Boys basically sealed the film's fate, similar to the debacle surrounding my next choice's release in such close proximity to the legendary E.T.

The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter's 'other' horror masterpiece that sadly underperformed at the box office during the Summer of E.T. but has happily gained significant cult traction since. I haven't seen this one in years so I'm due for a re-watch

We have a Friday the 13th next month, just in time for spooky season. If we aren't watching Jason Takes Manhattan you all have failed this club :o

My other two nominations:

Evil Dead 2

Tenebrae

For those unaware as to what this one is. It's a Dario Argento giallo about a writer investigating murders inspired by one of his books. If that doesn't sell you the music certainly should.

I watched Se7en tonight too. What a movie. But goddamn, is Brad Pitt ever at his most punchable in this thing. It's like he read the already obnoxious character on the page, and said, "I can do more." :funny: I remember feeling so dissatisfied by the ending of this flick the first time I saw it as a teen. That closing line from Somerset felt like such an unfinished, downer note to end on, it was the one part of the movie I didn't like. Now? Perfect and all too relatable for comfort lol.

Also, while I have grown to adore the Fincher Aesthetic™ as we know it today, I'd be lying if I said I didn't also kinda miss the way his movies looked on film. The aesthetic of this movie is such a mood. :hrt:

It's crazy how well-cast Spacey and Pitt are here. Fincher knew...

And yeah. Fincher's new current Aesthetic is awesome. But I too miss how it all looked on film. The Hulu version was surprisingly crisp. The shots out of the helicopter felt out of TDK in IMAX.

So nominations for October are now closed, which is probably a good thing because there are A LOT. So without further ado, our options for next month....
