Have fun watching back-to-back movies written by Frank Miller! I know you will enjoy them so much! :o

Ok y'all, time for our July category! In honor of a certain movie opening in the middle of the month, our category is...

Richard Donner

Richard-Donner-Marlon-Brando-on-the-set-of-Superman.jpg

As per usual with filmmaker categories, movies he only produced don't qualify, just directing and writing credits. And as Donner doesn't have a massive (non-TV) filmography to choose from, everybody gets up to THREE votes this time. Voting will be open through the weekend!

Our July picks!

The 70s, back when you could fly on an airplane with a bag of daggers on your lap.

What better way to celebrate the release of a new Superman film than with Richard Donner's classic horror film. Solid Gregory Peck performance as the poor guy seems to be constantly on the edge of an emotional breakdown. But the true star of the film was Jerry Goldsmith's score, you could tell **** was about to hit the fan whenever those strings started playing.

As a proud SHH member, this was without a doubt my biggest cinematic blindspot. I'd seen all the memes and spoofs over the years, and it was hard not to roll my eyes at the idea of it all. And yeah, watching it in context, stuff like the time-warping and Lex's entire deal still kinda sucks in my opinion. And the pacing is deeply odd. But what I didn't expect was how bold Donner's style is. It's an incredibly flashy movie, and has a cast that is always committed 100%. That's enough to carry it for a bulk of the runtime. And big props to the relentlessly horny chemistry between Supes and Lois - in today's painfully chaste Hollywood, what a refresher that was!

All in all, while certain choices ranged from WTF to cringe, this is a classic for a reason. Glad to finally check it off the list!

I know things have kinda died down in here this month but was going to suggest, with 'Highest 2 Lowest' coming out in August, that we could potentially do a Spike Lee month?

I was gonna do a genre this month since we did a director last month, but sure.

August’s category:

Spike Lee

I think this qualifies me as a bonafide influencer :nightcrawler:

Bamboozled
Crooklyn
Inside Man
Malcolm X

Three unseen entries at the top of my list and the masterpiece I've got to rewatch before his reunion with Denzel

Going mostly with deeper cuts I haven't seen:

Mo' Better Blues
Jungle Fever
He Got Game
Inside Man
