Hype Survivor! Mods vs Members - Day One: Opening Cemeronies

Umm....well, being as we didn't give you one....

Both submissions are in and being prepared for the judges. Hunter and I will rule on the bonus challenge shortly!

I am ready to make my avatar selection!

Tribe One:

Tribe Two:

I'd like to say that I don't think either is fantastic. Tribe one basically just slapped my name on a gif and tribe 2 came up with a slogan that really doesn't reflect me (though I do like the idea of me being the Hades to Hunter's Zeus). I wish they both better accounted for my personality. Maybe an IKYN avatar of some sort (as all of my avatars are always IKYN avatars). But alas, you did not. So I must judge what I am given.

I award two points to.........

TRIBE TWO!

Frankly, it is just a case of me liking their thematic idea behind it better. Neither are inspired avatars but I much prefer the theme behind it to Tribe 1's!

That means Tribe 2 now has two points. If Hunter picks Tribe 2 they will have five bonus points total. If he picks Tribe one, both tribes will have two points.

Hunter will pick shortly.

Damn your backhanded victory, Tribe 2! :cmad:

We had a lot of problems getting ahold fo anyone who could make avatars or could use photoshop (CC being very busy all weekend). We made a couple grids in paint but CC came in last minute and made the one we did have. We still didn't have any avatar makers though and in the end I had to slap those two together. I didn't expect either of them to win to be honest so I'm very pleased.

For the record, if we could find an avatar maker, we were probably going to have Matt's be a back and forth between him and Byrd Man with the whole Veto thing.... I kid you not :p

One set of scores in. The other two judges have contacted me and are looking them over. We should have the results at some point today.

I like that A LOT because I consider that to be the best move I've ever made in Hype Survivor. :hehe:

Good luck teams! May the best entry win...(I am just glad none of you SOB's pmed me to do it for you)....:p

powder makes the best grids though

Alrighty, I was going to wait for Hunter to pick his avatar of choice, but upon review of the scores, it doesn't really affect the outcome so I am just going to go ahead and get on with the....RESULTS!!!!

Sorry for the lateness guys, not a great day. My vote on the avvy was for tribe 2 as well, I liked the crisp design of it more than the little Capcom-esque Thanos sprite.

Ahem, in that case, Tribe 2 is awarded 5 bonus points for winning both host's votes. That gives them a 5 point edge moving forward.

Here are the two submissions:

My personal thoughts before I reveal the official results....I prefer Tribe 2. Tribe 1's theme, X-Men and Avengers just feels uninspired. Especially considering there was a Marvel vs DC game just a couple games ago. Plus Tribe 1 got the game's name wrong (Mods vs Players rather than Mods vs Members). None of the judges picked up on that but it really irked me. I appreciate Tribe 1's design, and like their logo a lot better but I think Tribe 2's concept is better (gods vs mortals, it better reflects our theme) and their design is definitely a cool one. So yeah, for me it wasn't even close. Buuuuut, I'm not a judge, so let's see what they think.

As mentioned...our judges are one mod, one member and one former mod turned member. We'll start with the latter....

Tribe 2's grid is really nice. I'm in Tribe 1 but heck even I have to admit Tribe 2's is really awesome and the better one.

Both teams spelled my username wrong though. :o ;)

Quiet Craigbfan! :argh: :hrt:

Our first judge is a former Hype moderator. He moderated the Green Lantern forum (I think), The Superman forums (I think) and the Bat forums (....I also think). I don't remember to be honest. But his username is a DC character. So I'm gonna stick with that. In his spare time he enjoys long walks on the beach and the Hotties thread. If memory serves he is particularly partial to Emmy Rossum. The one, the only, LOOOOOOOOBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO........It is Lobo.

I liked Tribe Two's just a wee bit more

Scores after first judging:

Tribe One - 17

Tribe Two - 24

Our next judge is a Hype Survivor legend when it comes to designing grids. His grids are among the best in the history of this game. He is the one...the only...POWdER-Man!

Here you go...

I have designed over a dozen grids during my Hype Survivor History, but this will be first time I get to judge others. Although I can GREATLY appreciate the time and effort involved by both tribes to design these things, I will provide you both with my thoughts and judge you fairly based on what I see (and not see) and what I have been instructed to look for as a judge.

Creativity
What I like: I like the morph in colors for the background to highlight both sides for each team. I LOVE your Survivor logo design. I can tell you guys made this from scratch and I dig that. I like you incorporating a GIF for the hosts, maybe not so much the character choices, but that is just a personal opinion.

What I don't like: The theme and character choices are, I am sad to say, lacking any real creativity. Out of all the movies, tv shows and options out there you went with an "Avengers vs X-men" theme. You do know we did just have a whole Survivor dedicated to Superheroes? As for the choices themselves; Spider-Fan being Spider-Man, SML being some version of Spider-Girl (she must be new b/c I don't recognize her), Byrdman being Beak....it just doesn't scream creative. Predictable yes, but not as creative as I would hope. We are playing a Survivor game on a Superhero website, you need to branch out.

Conclusion: Although I like some parts of your grid I will have to give you a mark based on the amount of effort I feel that you put forth on being creative. Not to mention it is Mods vs Members, why do we have X-men vs Avengers?

Quality:

What I like: I do LOVE your Survivor logo, you did a great job with that. I love the GIF as well, it comes out very well. (although I don't envy the Hosts having to edit it for evicted players). Again I love the change in colors for the background which I don't know if you actually did this or it just came this way.

What I don't like: The background is covered up too much. You can see bits and parts of it but it doesn't stand out, which makes it sort of just being there for the sake of being there. You should have either went with a bigger version of this image, or went with a different picture altogether. The Avatars have an odd darkish tone to them all, which doesn't make the pictures POP. Instead it sort of blends with the background. There are no borders around the avatars, not even a shadow, and the names over the pictures makes it harder to read. Yes you can read them but they are just not as clear as I would want them. If you added a slight shadow, border, or something else this would have helped greatly. The size of the background probably influenced this decision and unfortunately it is evident.

Quality: Again I like some parts of the grid but in the end the quality is just not there. I think overall it was a good effort and certainly better than a lot of grids I have seen in the past. I think with some fine tuning it could be a much better grid.

Creativity

What I like: Okay I love the theme you have going on here. Although I do recognize Hercules from the MU, and Zeus and Hades but I don't recognize most characters which means they are either simply from Greek Mythology or they are not common place enough to easily recognize so at least you stepped away enough from the simple Superhero theme and went with a game/battle of the gods. I like some character choices such as Dr. Evil's, Batman, and Fire's and so I can see you made an effort to tie the characters with the person. I still don't know if I agree with JH being Hercules but I regress. (you may have to explain your reasoning later on) Plus is SML a guy on there? If not she looks pretty "handsome".

What I don't like:
The Survivor logo is just your typical/standard logo. I would have liked to see more work put on this to make it your own. I don't like the placement of hosts. I also think you should have done something different beyond changing the border color (it is too similiar to the Members). They should have been labelled the hosts as well. When I look at that it looks like Hunter is the leader of the Mods and Matt is with the Members. The background, although it is visually pleasing, is just an image so there is nothing special with it. I would have liked to see something/anything done to make it special.

Conclusion: I enjoyed this grid and I feel you guys did a great job with it. I don't know if it was lack of time or effort but if you had spent a little more time on a few things I think it would have been perfect.

7/10
Quality

What I like: Okay there is no doubt that who made this has either done this before or is experienced. All the avatars stand out and are crisp and clear. The background is clear and the center image makes you focus on it and highlights the feeling that there is a battle brewing. All the names are easy to read and have a nice border around them. The avatars have a nice border around them and they highlight the division between each team.

What I don't like: Again I think you could have done a much better logo. You could have also done something more with the background.

Conclusion: There is not much to complain about as it is certainly a visually stimulating image. The hosts names are too similar to the Members. (white on black instead of black on white)

9/10

Total Points:

Tribe One - POWdER awarded tribe one 13 points. In addition to their 17 from Lobo, that makes their total 30 points!

Tribe Two - POWdER awarded tribe two 16 points. In addition to their 19 from Lobo and five bonus points, that makes their total 40 points!

So as we go onward to the final judge, the scores are....

Tribe One - 30

Tribe Two - 40

However, this may not be over. Our final judge is notorious for his low scores. When it comes to Hype Survivor judging, he is our Simon Cowell.....
