Not true. The reason it was split into three was because at the time paper was really expensive, and if Allen & Unwin had published it as a single book it would've been so expensive that no one would've bought it.

The HOBBIT was a single book....but....for the movie, they are incorporating things he wrote in other books that dealt with things that took place at the same time.
