Are there films in which you feel a very real affinity with, that 'speak' to you or you have a bond through the story or feelings felt when watching the film, due to the time in which you first watched it perhaps or the characters dealing with similar things you have for example....

I finally saw The Graduate for the first time last year and, boy, do I get that feeling of "drifting" through life.

Things don't seem set and it all just blurs into one movement... yeah, I've been there.

- "Up In The Air" is definitely one of those kinds of movies for me. I relate to Clooney's character in almost every way - especially the self-imposed isolation or "cocoon of self-banishment" mentioned by Anna Kendrick's character.
- At one point "Swingers" was my most relatable movie. I was Mike back in my late teens early 20's.
- Then you have "Fight Club" and the whole existential crisis of it all.

Mike from Swingers was also my go-to relatable character.

Now that I'm married with a kid, own my house, take family vacations, etc... I honestly think Clark Griswold is about as relatable as they get for me.

Though I must say that The Graduate is something I related too.

Its funny how, we're all familiar with the themes, but when you get to a certain age, then that movie or topic becomes more meaningful.

I would say mine in defining 'growing up' at various stages were E.T., saw it at 7, similar age to Elliot in the film and I was very isolated in my life at that point and that theme struck for me and of course his very deep friendship with E.T.

In my 20's I would say Donnie Darko, resonated very strongly with me, not obviously the rabbit telling the future stuff, but more his family relationships and therapy experience.

And then an extension of that is Good Will Hunting and the relationship between Will and Robin Williams' character gets me every time.

The Wrestler. I even can't watch it a second time because of the memories it brings up.

Office Space
American Beauty
The Truman Show

Science of sleep
Eternal sunshine.
Dazee and confused

Die Hard: With a Vengeance. Going to work hungover and getting in foul mouthed tirades with your buddy, an all too common occurence.

'Get Out' really spoke to me; despite never having been in an interracial relationship.

I used to work in the exact same kind of foster care facility portrayed in Short Term 12. Many of the details in the film are painfully accurate. A lot of the plot however tends to be a bit more wishfullfillment.

Great movie though.
