I don't LIKE your Chineesey Name!

Theres this guy in one of my classes that always got us to call him "Frank" and today we put up our art for an open house and I found out his name is actually different, I can't remember what exactly it was but it wasn't an English name

Either way, I found it weird that he goes by Frank
Frank is an awesome name! :cmad:

That is just hilariously awful. I remember on some cartoon that used to air on WB back in the day, they had immigrants coming into the country from China or Japan and the agent asked their name and it was this long convoluted moniker and the agent was like, "we're going to call you Mike Thomas from now on."

i think the only people have trouble with this is senior citizens , if not we're in trouble.

I wonder what other groups of people she would like to be more like "us" to make it easier on "themselves"?

It could be worse. They could have one of those fake African names. My friend's father had a student named, I kid you not, "Shatheed". Except it wasn't spelled with an a and two e's.

:lmao:

We should just give everyone numbers and and letters so that we all know who we are. :whatever:

I am not a number, I'm a free man

... Oh my.
I say stick with the Asian name to promote some diversity. Hopefully it'd bring some out the tolerance in some people.

If ya still want an Anglicized name you can have it as a nick name. Loads of my pals do that.

And as a kiddo with an ethnic name, I say this is ********.

That's just ridiculous. Any kid who watches Naruto can take in and process Japanese/Asian names. Hell, watch a few late night cheesy old kung-fu movies and see how many Chinese names you can remember.

He probably remembers Chow Yun-Fat (a man whose name is so simple the only thing you can screw up is the order... and quite easily, depending on where you read it first) as "that Chinese feller who always shoots them guns at other Chinese fellers I can't name because single syllable names are way beyond my scope."

No, they really can't, and that's the most hilarious part about it all.

Really? Because I've seen little kids who can name characters like Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke.

Also, I went to elementary school with lots of Chinese and Indian kids. You'd be surprised how well American kids can remember non-Anglicized names.

I'm mainly making fun of the fact that a lot of the Japanese fanboys/fangirls I know profess to "knowing Japanese" because of the TV shows or movies, and really barely know jack. From the few Japanese shows or movies I've watched, I've heard that most of my friends don't even pronounce the three names you mentioned correctly.

I personally don't understand this obsession with Japanese culture brought on by watching anime. I love the study of their war strategies and technology, but beyond that, I just don't get it.

Okay, I'll admit that there's a ridiculous amount of people out there who put emphasis on the wrong syllables of Sakura, but my point is that they remember the names.

Animation is an art form, and people just gravitate toward art sometimes.

I love animation. I can't stand anime though. It's so... Ugly.

I think it depends on what anime you're watching. Some anime is simply hideous, but there are some sublimely drawn animated films out there. The art styles vary so much, you might as well say that all American animation looks ugly, knowing good and well that you just included Aqua Teen Hunger Force in the same group as Disney's Bambi.

I remember growing up, just down the street from me lived an Indian family. I was friends with the kid that lived there. All growing up, we always called him Paul, that was the name he went by.

It wasn't until later that I found out his name was actually Satinder. I asked him "If your name is Satinder, why do you go by Paul?" His answer was "Because it's easier for people to understand".

I was just like "How hard is it to learn how to pronounce 'Satinder'?"

Needless to say, once I found out his -real- name, I always called him Satinder instead of Paul.

Look, I know in the past I've been all about making immigrants who come here learn how to read and speak English, and assimilate into American culture.

However, this is one instance where people NEED to be able to keep their own culture. It's not just a culture issue. It's an issue of individuality.

Saying that somebody has to change their IDENTITY so that the rest of us can understand it?

That's absolutely freaking ridiculous. Take a god damned moment of your life to learn how to pronounce "Satinder" correctly, and stop making him go by "Paul" because your ignorant, redneck Texan ass can't figure out how to open a bag of Fritos properly, let alone pronounce someone's name.

Anime = Japanese animation. In other words, stuff like DragonBall Z, for a more obvious example.

It's loosely tossed around as a nickname for animation, but very rarely, and it's not accurate.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Bambi are cartoon animations. Not animes.

I don't care for some American animation styles as well. But anime as a whole, I tend not to care for. Too exaggerated, very ugly, and was too easy for me to pick up and draw right off the bat for me to have any real respect for it.

Y... you mean... I'm not the only one who despises anime with every fiber of my being?

Come here man!!! *opens arms to offer hug*

I love you.

I was making a comparison. If you say that all anime is ugly, then you might as well say that all American animation is ugly because it's a broad generalization. For example, saying that all American animation is ugly would mean including shoddily drawn animated TV shows in the same group as Disney's animated classics. I was trying to say that the same applies to anime, which has a mixture of badly drawn and well drawn series/movies.

Anime is a distinct style of animation, which I don't like. Sure, it's a broad generalization, but it's a broad generalization of a particular style of animation, and you're twisting my words.

Even the "well-drawn" ones are, as I said, ugly, exaggerated, and too easy to replicate for me to have any decent amount of respect for its artists.

Go watch a Hayao Miyazaki film and then tell me those films are "ugly" and "too easy to draw" for you to respect. :down
