I remember on some cartoon that used to air on WB back in the day, they had immigrants coming into the country from China or Japan and the agent asked their name and it was this long convoluted moniker and the agent was like, "we're going to call you Mike Thomas from now on."

That's just ridiculous. Any kid who watches Naruto can take in and process Japanese/Asian names. Hell, watch a few late night cheesy old kung-fu movies and see how many Chinese names you can remember.

He probably remembers Chow Yun-Fat (a man whose name is so simple the only thing you can screw up is the order... and quite easily, depending on where you read it first) as "that Chinese feller who always shoots them guns at other Chinese fellers I can't name because single syllable names are way beyond my scope."

I'm mainly making fun of the fact that a lot of the Japanese fanboys/fangirls I know profess to "knowing Japanese" because of the TV shows or movies, and really barely know jack. From the few Japanese shows or movies I've watched, I've heard that most of my friends don't even pronounce the three names you mentioned correctly.

I personally don't understand this obsession with Japanese culture brought on by watching anime. I love the study of their war strategies and technology, but beyond that, I just don't get it.

I think it depends on what anime you're watching. Some anime is simply hideous, but there are some sublimely drawn animated films out there. The art styles vary so much, you might as well say that all American animation looks ugly, knowing good and well that you just included Aqua Teen Hunger Force in the same group as Disney's Bambi.

I remember growing up, just down the street from me lived an Indian family. I was friends with the kid that lived there. All growing up, we always called him Paul, that was the name he went by.

It wasn't until later that I found out his name was actually Satinder. I asked him "If your name is Satinder, why do you go by Paul?" His answer was "Because it's easier for people to understand".

I was just like "How hard is it to learn how to pronounce 'Satinder'?"

Needless to say, once I found out his -real- name, I always called him Satinder instead of Paul.

Look, I know in the past I've been all about making immigrants who come here learn how to read and speak English, and assimilate into American culture.

However, this is one instance where people NEED to be able to keep their own culture. It's not just a culture issue. It's an issue of individuality.
