I hate My Chemical Romance

Yeah, the punk scene is pretty vicious. Just by signing a record deal, Green Day automatically became sellouts to a lot of those folks. But, the guys in Green Day stick to THEIR ideals, not the ones that everyone else thinks they should have. I have to admire that even if I'm not a big fan of a lot of their music.

I can't attest to knowing a lot about Greenday music but simply from what I hear here and there, I really like there stuff pre-American Idiot... American Idiot was way too soap-boxy at least from what I heard on the radio. As for selling-out, it's one of those terms where there is no definate definition... To me selling-out is simply when you change your art to sell more, however to others making money is selling out which to me is completely ridiculous.

What the hell is with all the band-politics stuff anyway? You like a band, you like their music, simple as that. What the hell does it even have to do with where they play shows or which label they're on?

I just made a thread because I was pissed that I can't get a jacket that I want without the chance that someone's going to connect it to MCR

it got hijacked

Punk is dead. Nowhere days what people call punk is stuff like Blink 182 and Avril Lavegne.

Music becomes for whatever reason somewhat of a life-style by teenagers and college student as some way to "FIGHT THE SYSTEM!". So when you finally figure out your band is actually making money and is part of the system... Well I'm sure it's just devestating:woot:

Being a musician and artist myself, that's the definition I view as selling out. When you start calculating what you are doing as an artist solely because you think it will make you more money and not because that's really your artistic vision, that's when you've sold out. I don't think Green Day hasn't pursued anything that they haven't wanted to do first and foremost as artists. If an artist can stay true to their own vision and art and somehow make money...even an obscene amount of it...then more power to them. Look at a band like Queen, for example. Those guys never gave an inch in their music and were always pushing the boundaries of new technology and recording techniques, and clearly made a lot of songs that they just thought were amusing and wanted to see if they could even do them because of the technical challenge as producers and musicians (Bohemian Raphsody comes to mind, here). They also were all over the map with musical styles, just experimenting with different sounds and musical approaches. And they are considered one of the best bands of all time, both for their artistic merits and commercial success. I would hardly call them sellouts.

It's become so much more than it ever would have on it's own. Be a proud parent.

Can't disagree with that at all.

It never did that for me. Weird. I think I know what you mean though... the whole dressing like/talking like/acting like/making music like etc this weeks biggest band seems to be pretty prevelant in my college.

When I wanted to fight the system, I helped my dad's friends fix their Harley's...

You know I think any thread with ' My Chemical Romance' in the title should be locked stright away. lol.

There's a certain amount of irony in supposed "fringe groups" like goths, emos, punks, etc. that claim to be all about individuality and fighting conformity and the system, yet in order to be included you have to dress and act a certain way, like certain bands and share a certain value set.

Which is why I don't hang around music message boards any more. I'm too much of a free spirit for punk rock...

There still some decent punk just not the **** that the radio deems punk... I like Floggin Molly quite a bit but then again that's Irish Punk, I suppose that's a different breed.

I think we pretty much clarified that for you. No one is going to tie that jacket to an MCR video, and anyone who does is probably "emo" anyway, whcih means you can easily kick their ass and then tell them that MCR sucks.

Capiche?

I was stating my basis for making my thread to begin with, in comparison to what it has become.

Joey Ramone just rolled over in his grave.....

When I get told that I can't possibly like Afi because I hate dying my hair, don't wear makeup, don't look good in black and think Davey Havok is butt-ugly, then I think I can legitimately say that I'm too much of a free-spirit.

Aren't AFI and My Chemical Romance the same band?

I know. I was just pointing out the irony in that post, since in it's hey day Punk Rock used to be all about being a free spirit and not conforming to any kind of norm.

As if. MCR have been musicians for about five years. Afi started releasing albums from before I was born- Check out Very Proud Of Ya or Answer That And Stay Fashionable. Their more recent stuff isn't so good, but in the early days? Amazing. Think, early Offspring ['92-'95 era] but with lots more balls.

Nowhere days what people call punk?
Somewhere evenings what I like to relax with a 8ong hit or 4?
