..When you go to local gig venues, which are for all ages, only to realise that all the little kids aren't appreciative of the music.

I went to my friend's gig last night and the turn out was POOR. It's been alot better than this, but it saddens me that sometimes local venues just don't do that well and local bands just don't get the recognition they deserve.

I mean the venue he played, my band has played before and the night we did it sold out. Over 100 heads and it was fun, playing to that many people. I'm not saying we were the ones that were able to obtain that many people because we probably weren't.

It just saddens me that especially if you are an unknown band and you are head-lining a local venue, all the little kids have to go early as well, which leaves you playing to a dead crowd, mainly consisting of techies and bands that have already played.

It really bugs me, some little venues are great but you get the stupid bastard teenagers who listen to my chemical romance and Panic at the disco, who think they are cool with their flock of seagulls haircut and their trendy designer shoes, who are worried about getting off with any cute looking girl.

Well, if you really wanna wear these clothes and you really think you like rock music, support the scene, listen, support the bands.

It really annoys me.

Support your local scene!

I wish the place I lived in had a local scene.

All we do is sit around getting drunk and stoned, and then we go out to the hockey games.

It's true what they say about Canadians...:csad:

A friend of mine plays guitar in a band based out of toronto. When he and I were roommates he and the band had such a ridiculously hard time making the transition from all-ages to adult shows. They're doing pretty well now and not only is there a huge revenue difference in terms of percentage pay considering adults contribute far more to the bar intake, but they have fewer problems with fights and other petty ****.

Well....some venues exploit bands, not even willing to at least give some money back if they deserve it. :cmad:

It sucks dude. Music has gone the way of the dodo, much like any other form of art these days, including even journalism as is evidence by the bull**** we see on the news every night. I'm no communist, but capitalism has clearly shown that art is of no regard. I feel sorry for kids who are going to have to grow up without ever, ever being exposed to real music. :(

In this day an age. Art is only important if it's going to make a dollar or two. :(

If you're good, and smart (know how to attract a paying crowd), none of this should be a problem.

I've no band now(and it sucks ass X 100), but when I did, our fruntmang Eric:

always drew me out of my Shell-of-Superiority.
He's like, "Ya want that chick to come see us?!?" (when we were at a bar)
and I'm like, "........DuH!"

And he'd go, "Well go tell her that!"
And I would.
And next thing you know, we're being stalked and man-handled by attractive, wealthy chicks. :(

It were nice, but the main thing is:

You can't say,
"Support musicians whom you have no interest in solely because they live near you!!!!"
That makes a silly bumper sticker.

I truly feel that
Local or not,.....you've got to be intriguing enough to make it worth a stranger's while.

You've got to blow up and offer the false promise of...a night where they'll have a blast,...possibly get laid...while deferring to your own musical mastery.

That's what I think.

Well...I suppose some bands just don't do enough advertising.

I mean when my band has a gig, I'll just put posters on myspace and other websites to advertise and we generally do get a crowd, even it's our friends.

If Pink Floyd were to be a new, experimental band today, they wouldn't make a dime. The fortunate thing is that we now have alternative outlets like peer2peer sharing for music. I really think this might be the last saving grace, but time will tell.

I've been introduced to so much original **** through p2p and bought every deserving album. People say that it hurts the musicians, but I've spent more on indie musicians since being introduced to p2p then I ever could have dreamed just listening to the radio.

Music and Film is going to be so easy to self-obtain in the future.

In the next few years, anyone who is anyone will be able to make these two important parts of the media.

Not a bad thing though.

Not at all. It actualy brings power back to the consumer. The only variable might be whether or not our culture is already so ****ed up and dry that they still buy into the bull**** hack jobs even when there is good art available to them. Also, don't discount the fact that when the government gets involved in internet censorship a **** storm is likely to occur.

Yeah, but you have an 8 piece band and they all have 10 semi/strong-friends each...
But the friends from out of the corner of your eye are looking for fun so they bring their effing work-mates, and a small percentage of the work-mates bring their siblings or their crazy old Moms, etc. and you end up with a nice blend.

Whatever.

I think the key is, you've got to write dynamite songs and offer fun.
What a pain though.
F***ers!:cmad:
Come to the god-damned show you warts!

Well, I mean we've played to 200-300 people, which is GREAT. I couldn't ask for more.

For me, I'd be made if we could record some great songs, maybe even be put an indie label and get people to come to our shows without having to ask.

That would be me done.

I mean, I am in a band to express myself, not to make money.

Which is what art is all about at the end of the day.

Playing out can be a crapshoot. Especially if your trying to do your thing. Cover bands have it a little easier. If they are even half good they can play out pretty regularly and get a bit of a crowd. My band is a bit off the norm. Sometimes we get a good crowd, sometimes not. Takes alot of work to get to the point where you have a following. Let me tell you, none of us are doing it for the money. Its easy to get the gig, much more difficult to get much if any green out of it. I am old, so my pay is having scantily clad 20 something chicks hang out and dance, while we jam. I have yet to not get paid in full there. In the end I dont blame the population for not supporting the music scene better. The music scene is getting exactly what it is worth. Art is still very much alive, and everywhere. Your perception of what Art is, or should be, may be changing or not in line with others. The great news is that the local music scene is now world wide. Thanks to that there internet and cheap recording equipment and cameras, we can all have our own radio station, or Mtv station.

where i live it's kind of hard NOT to support your local music scene.
that's why were considered the Live Music Capital of the World!!!!!
yeah baby! in everyones faCE!!!

what i think is sad is the bands that don't support eachother!
i've talked to so many people in bands that say "you know, i'm on the same booking as these guys and i come early or stick around to see their show, and they just leave and never stick around to see ours".
and the same goes for their fans
shouldn't there be some camaraderie?
i know if i'm going to pay $13 to get into a club, i'm gonna see what the other acts are about. *****!!! that's $13!!
