Hello everyone. I've posed this question before but the thread seems to be gone. I wasn't sure where to pose this question, but the Superman Returns board is kinda dead and I really want to ask everyone this question.....

My question is would you rather keep the Bryan Singer Superman Returns film the way it is or would you rather trade that film for the Tim Burton / Jon Peters strange but interesting Superman Lives 1998 project starring Nic Cage as Superman, treatment by Kevin Smith ?

I know neither projects might not satisfy you, but if you had to choose ONE, which one would you prefer ??????

Burton's film. It would have sucked but at least it would have been one of those films you watch for a good laugh every couple of years.

I'll take Singer's over Burton's. Returns wasn't exactly the best movie ever but it also wasn't the worst. I feel Burton's movie would have been a complete joke, Quest for Peace status but weirder. I also think that Routh's Superman would have been better than Cage's Superman.

Burton's....Singer's movie was just dull and drab. Burton's Superman might've been dark and unfaithful, but at least it would've been entertaining and original. it would've probably been a guilty pleasure.

Even if the story was interesting it would have bugged me to hell and back watching Nic Cage. It would have been like watching an else world twilight- zone bizzaro movie. Although Singers movie was slow, badly written, Supes was a stiff mute and Clark couldn't articulate and kept getting cut off mid sentence, it pains me (I mean really) to say I'd pick SR. Even though it probably had as many things wrong with it as SL would have, I just couldn't pick a Cage Superman over anything.

i'm torn here....

i like (don't love) Returns for taking me back to the Donner-verse films again...i grew up on Superman The Movie and Superman II ( and i even enjoyed a couple parts of Superman III....Superman IV only exists in this universe for sinner's to watch as penance) ,so it was nice and nostalgic to hear the theme again, see references to the past films, and just have the general vibe and flow of those older films ( even in Routh and bosworth,AND the new suit sucked!)

and the same time,i've seen enough concept art, costume tests, leaked toy pics, and some script pages to make me realize Burton's Superman Lives/Reborn would've been a seriously f**ked up mind-altering experience, and perhaps the very definition of a "Summer Popcorn Movie".... so i REALLY wish this had been made too,if for no other reason than just to see how messed up a Tim Burton Superman movie could be,or how far he was willing to go with it...

How can I possibly know what to choose when I never saw the Burton movie?

And those drawings and pre-production things often say little about the final result.

Can't vote here.

The Superman Lives project already loses because of Nic Cage. YUCK

Superman Returns, I think Superman Lives would have been even more damaging to the franchise.

I'd rather have an average but faithful Superman movie than a so-bad-it's-good bastardization.

Superman Lives all the way. I really wish the Weslet Strick's script was to be found somewhere. There is the Dan Gilroy revision, which clearly has things cut down for budgetary reasons.

We finally agree on something.

Hard to say really. Burton's Superman, being that it never happened, has potential... whereas Singer's was (to me) an all around let down. Although I don't think Tim Burton was the right guy for Superman.

You sure all you need is some sour grapes spitting and not to see the actual movie before judging?

In fairness, I didn't post that in complete seriousness because I wasn't expecting anyone to take this seriously... I just really find that description of the process funny.

But there are plenty of elements of the rumoured storyline that put me off, plus the ridiculous costume concept. And I just don't think Tim Burton's style suits a Superman film.

Not to mention NICHOLAS CAGE as Superman!!!!!!!!

No, there are plenty of instances where I think you can't judge something until you've seen it, but this is not one of them.

The movie would have sucked. Period. IMO.

Exactly what I felt when I found out that Michael Keaton was going to be Batman and Batman didn't have Robin and would wear some black armour instead of his real blue/gray suit only Joker was going to be there as a villiain.

Then I saw the actual movie.

Still fighting the good fight El Payaso. I check this thread often to see if there's some critical post about Lives and post a counter-message, but lately I haven't really bothered, because there's always going to be people who just don't like Nicolas Cage or are just conservative when it comes to Superman.

I genuinely can't compare those two things, and I'm sure it's half because I am a bigger Superman fan than I am Batman, so I'm sorry for my general bias.

I personally am not the biggest fan of Burton's style in general. I think it didn't do damage to the Batman franchise because Batman can suit the dark, quirkyness of it. The two fit well together. It's not everyone's taste, or everyone's preference for how Batman should be handled, but it didn't stray too far from the character.

Putting Nicolas Cage in that black suit and trying to call it a Superman movie would have damaged the franchise IMO. Superman Returns, in the eyes of the public, was forgettable, but didn't hurt the character. It didn't do much of anything.

Burton's Superman would have been the equivalent of Batman and Robin, only worse IMO.

P.S. Nouan, I actually really like Nicolas Cage. Just as long as he stays far far away from Superman.

Haha well IMO Superman Lives could have been a great dark sci-fi action movie. And I refuse to believe it would have hurt Superman. It would have been different but very interesting. At least not bland like I felt Superman returns was.

It would have given more weight on the Superman being an alien and feeling isolated, which is something I would like to see explored in a Superman movie. Of course with Superman Lives it might have been a little emo. But propably not. And I get that Superman shouldn't be a depressed mopey character, but perhaps he would have gotten over it by the time of the sequel. :D

And I resent the notion that Lives would have been equivalent of B&R.

You know, I just went looking for more details on Superman lives, and ended up reading Wikipedia's 'Superman in film' which basically summarises the plots and casting choices of 5 or 6 different scripts/ideas, some of which I knew about and some were new to me (they nearly had Lois have a virgin birth?!).

After taking all that in, I genuinely can't form the words to argue which would have been better.

All I can do is thank god some of those things never happened (the Batman/Superman script I actually have read and quite liked), and now the project is safely in the hands of SANE people!
