I hate these type of threads too, but I really need some fricking advice right now. Yes, I turned to a bunch of comic nerds like myself for advice. So what?!

I have a crappy job at a Sears store that's not very busy. It's outside of a mall and I work mostly everyday full time from 7:45 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. Which is not bad hours. The pay's not good however. Also not good is there are too many cooks in the kitchen at this place. Managers from different departments can cross breed and have say so in another department. Hell, the assistant store manager doubles as the Electronics Department manager full time!

I know the answer is easy. Get another job, go out and look for one. The only free time I ever have is during the weekends (usually the days they give me off) or when I request a day off. I feel like I live in the store and if you live in the store you can't obviously leave the store to get another job.

I'm tired of jobs that go nowhere. I want a job that can go somewhere and lead me to have better pay. A better life (I already have a good one, just a better one.), and all the benefits that come with finding that one job that can take you places. I've never even remotely held that close at any job I've had. I've tried Monster and Hot Jobs to look for such a job, but I just see the listings and I feel so lost and like an idiot. :csad:

Question is: What should I do? Where do I go from here? I'm just far too lost right now.

PS: God, I really did just make this thread didn't I? :csad:

I'm guessing, JustABill, that you're young. You've got plenty of time. You don't need to be stressing out about work. Go to college. Have fun with your life.

Bill, you have to figure out what interests you enough to do on a daily basis. Then figure out how to make money at it. :D Seriously though, consider a 'profession,' rather than a 'job.' Often times, that requires college. I know it's time consuming, but it's better to do it now than be stuck in a job you hate, forever.

I was in college, but I dropped out. I've thought numerous times of getting back in. I just I still need the money to help my roomie pay the bills and the apartment. So I don't know where to go in that respect. I mean I know he'd support me going back to college. I just don't know if the idea of me giving all my time to it would fly with him.

And yes, Kaine, you are right. I'm 22.

Going to college, if thats what you want to do is more important than what your roommate thinks, it will likely change your life. Priorities man, if you want it, go and get it.

Eh, he's pretty important to me too though.

I just have to work something out. I can't stay like I am currently.

As much as the reality of tons of uneducated millionaires would show otherwise, college is a good idea...if you know what you want to do.

But my advice to everyone is always the same on this...what do you enjoy? Now is there something about that subject that is currently not being filled (the answer is always "yes", no matter what). Think about how you can fill that void, and then start your own business.

If you're located near a small town or city you should check out phone-based customer service. Especially for big telephone and television providers. Usually they pay very well based on the area and sometimes they hire from within.

I know people who worked their way through college by working at call centers and are now working at the Director and Vice Presidental level. Some don't have degrees yet and they're still in the management level.

You should go to college but the call center is a good place to start making money.

That or prostitution.

How long have you been at that job?

How long have you been at that job?
Since I moved to Ellicott City, so about 6 months?

I live literally 15 minutes if not that from Baltimore, so there should be plenty of opportunities for me around here. I just have no clue where to start.

College is a good one. As was the suggestiong of the call centers. I also had thought about starting my own business, but I don't know how I'd go about that. I had even thought about opening a comic book shop at one time, but eh. Don't know how well that'd do.

On another note, I'm a passionate writer. I love writing. Creative writing especially.

Either start in a company in a position which may give you access to others or go back to college. There is no mystery about it. If you want a high paying corporate job you need good credentials.

If you are very good start your own business.

And you may have to continue working while you go to college which means saying goodbye to your free time for a few years. It is defionitely a sacrifice but one which could and not will pay.

Talk to the Local Newspaper, see if they have any openings. Anything at all. When I was your age, I worked at a Cigar Store, and Loss Prevention for a large department store. I was at the Cigar Store for 5 years, and the LP Job for 2 years. I did both for quite a long time. 6 months is not a long time at all. Remember the most important thing you can do, if you are not going to college, I don't have a lick of college in me, is to build you Resume. And 6 months isn't long enough to build up that reputation as a hard worker. I worked those two jobs together for 2 years before I met a President of a Cigar Manufacturer. He already heard about me through the Rep from his company, he came in to the store and took me out to dinner, and hired me on the spot. I am now the Production Manager and Purchasing guy for his $40 Million company, I've been here for 2 years. I love this job.

Remember, the most important thing you can do is build that Resume. What do you do on your off hours after 4pm?

I'm usually at home. Just doing various things. The thing is I have no problem staying with a place. Just none of my jobs before have been that place. I've stayed at places for longer than 6 months. That's not the problem. The problem is I'm having trouble locating the right job for me.

I assume I could talk to the Howard County Times or hell even the Sun.

My thing is, don't ever be afraid to ask, and don't be afraid to be at a job that don't seem great, but could grow into something. If you get a job at Newspaper, and are there for a long time, you could grow that into either the Manufacture/Printing side of it, or the writing side. The Advertising side, the sales side. You could make it your own, and move onto another job later that that experience would help push you along. Don't be afraid of working at a place that helps you move up later.

The only jobs I've had were at a grocery store, Blockbuster, a gas station, and now Sears. Are these places you really see going places or leading to better places?

I love when people say stuff like this.

I'm in the same boat. I have bills to PAY. If i just quit my job, how will i pay my bills? Rent? Insurance? Then on top of that, pay for college?

I guess you can be homeless and still go to college.

There is this thing called student loans.

It's not as much the places you've been, but how you were when you were there. Did you apply yourself and show leadership when you were there? Did you ensure the prosperity of the company/store you worked for when you were there? Did you show up on time every day, did you stay late or volunteer to stay late or come in when no one else was available?
It's more of what you did there, not the places you were before.

Before this career, I had worked as a grocery bagger, a Retail Clothing Sales Assistant, a Pizza Cook at Pizza Hut, a Busser at Bob Evens, was in the Marine Corps, Sales in the Cigar Store and elevated up to Store Manager after 5 years, and Loss Prevention. What does a being a Grocery Bagger have to do with being a Production Manager for a $40 Million company? Nothing. But it helped me get to where I am today.

If you were able to find the time to post this, then you have the time to find another job. Try the large number of online job sites out there. Spend your prescious weekend time driving around and putting in applications. I always like this analogy, if the grass in your yards gets to a point where it bothers you, what do you do? You cut the grass. Meaning, if the job truely bothered you enough, you'd go do something about it. So, either quit complaining, or go cut the grass.

You work at the same time, I do a full time masters course at university, just finished a 3 year degree and work a job, still get time to do what I want. Get a student loan.

I'm not complaining. And why do you think it's taking me such a long time to post replies you genius. I'm doing exactly what you said, searching online job sites.

Hell, I'm not saying I can't do both. I've thought about doing both.

And it figures of all the threads I've made in the community it'd be the most selfish one that'd get posts.
