I like Titanic

Yeah, it was very odd. It's not as if Cameron has any contempt for strong female characters if you take a look at his filmography so I have no idea what his thought process there was. I also have no idea what he was thinking in regards to that Murdock scene.

What baffled me was that everything leading up to that moment in the lifeboat indicated that Cameron was going along with her story, but at the big moment where she took command of her lifeboat and persuaded them to go back and look for survivors, he bailed out and showed her just sitting down and shutting up in complete opposition to the character she showed during the rest of the movie. And I can't think of a good reason why, unless he decided he didn't like her and wanted to make her look bad. It's just very strange.
I don't think he didn't like her, he just opted to keep the focus on Jack and Rose with a 3+ hour runtime, which makes sense but not at the cost of omitting a remarkable true life event.

Best not to dig too much, I mean if you think too hard that a 3 day relationship is considered one of the best love stories in cinema. :o

Shame it was the most uninteresting part of the movie too. :o

I don't think that's the reason either, but I don't know why else he would show her in such a bad light, after spending so much time on her character. I don't think it would have shifted any focus to show Brown commanding the lifeboat, or at the VERY least cutting out the scene where crewman Hitchens yells at her and she backs down.

It's a shame because it's such a great movie but that just makes it all the more weird when it strikes a wrong chord.

Just came back from seeing this in the remastered 4K 3D HDR with "Dolby Cinema" (Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos).

First time seeing this was back when it came out in 1997, and seeing it again today, all I could think was that this was pretty much peak James Cameron. Just such a well-made film overall that was masterfully directed, and still delivered in every way. Kate Winslet in her star-making role just reminded me of how good she was in this - and how beautiful she was on screen. :hrt:

The 3D visuals and the Dolby Atmos audio really added to it too. And seeing the movie really made me want to see Aliens and True Lies get this kind of treatment too, with 4K 3D HDR versions of those as well. Dang that would be awesome, especially for Aliens. Hope that happens one day.

I also saw Titanic in theaters over the weekend. I saw it in theaters at least 3-4 times back in 1997-1998. Seeing it again now like this, it is still as good and breathtaking as the very first time.

I don't care what anyone says. Titanic is a masterpiece and it is exactly what movies are made for. It still remains such a stunning achievement in filmmaking across so many levels, and it holds up VERY well to this day. I feel like some people forget how BIG this movie is and how intense it gets at times, but there are also so many wonderful and impactful smaller moments throughout. The performances, attention to detail, musical score, cinematography, VFX, set pieces, and yes, the story...it's just James Cameron literally firing on every possible cylinder.

It was also cool to see some parents taking their kids or teens (who most likely hadn't seen it before) to see this in theaters. I hope to do that with my kids someday when they're old enough. I heard people and kids gasping throughout in my showing. Even my wife, who must have seen this movie 10 times throughout her life (but may not in the last few years) was jumping throughout and practically biting her nails in fear for Jack and Rose in the second half, despite knowing exactly how it ends.

I remember when the movie came out in 1997 and how it took over the Google movies discussion forum, to the point that other posters complained about it. People talked about how the movie consumed their thoughts, how they had nightmares about drowning after watching it. One person talked about how they had to pull over and stop their car when "My Heart Will Go On" played on the radio because they started sobbing. It was #1 at the box office for months. Not sure if any movie since has so totally taken over popular culture.

It's interesting to see people having similar reactions on Twitter now after seeing the movie for the first time. "Titanic"'s still got it!

As someone who's seen Titanic many times, but never had a chance to see it at a cinema, I am happy I finally managed to.

This was phenomenal on the big screen. Some of the best 3D conversion I've ever seen as well.

I was curious where Barbie was on the top $$$ of all-time list. So I checked out Wikipedia. The film currently ranks 14th — and probably won’t get higher.

List of highest-grossing films - Wikipedia

Then I happened to scan the top 5 and noticed Titanic. It’s ranked at #4, with a grand total of $2,257,844,554. But this figure comes with a substantial — and somewhat confusing — footnote:

The totals given for Titanic at Box Office Mojo and The Numbers are both incorrect. Prior to the 2023 re-release, the totals at both trackers were inflated above the true figure.
  • As of 2019, Box Office Mojo correctly recorded that Titanic had grossed $1.843 billion on its original release, $344 million from its 3D reissue in 2012, and a further $692,000 from a limited release in 2017 for a lifetime total of $2.187 billion.[13] Following a limited re-release in 2020, Box Office Mojo incorrectly added $7 million to the original release total.[14] By the end of 2021, Box Office Mojo had corrected the original release total, but added the $7 million figure to both the 2012 and 2017 reissue totals, incorrectly increasing the lifetime total by $14 million to $2.202 billion.[15] At the beginning of 2023, Box Office Mojo corrected the total for the 2017 reissue, bringing the lifetime gross down to $2.195 billion, but retained the error in the 2012 reissue.[16]
  • The Numbers does not log individual releases, but had the lifetime total recorded as $2.186 billion in September 2014 (roughly equating to $1.843 billion for the original release and $343.6 million for the 3D reissue).[17] A couple of weeks later, The Numbers increased the lifetime gross to $2.208 billion, without explanation.[18]
:ebr:

(1st) moral of the story: I guess the totals provided by BOMojo and The-Numbers aren’t necessarily gospel. Though, in this case, most of the ambiguity seems to arise out of Titanic’s multiple re-releases. And most movies don’t have this issue. In any case, the $ discrepancies (one way or another) don’t appear to be significant enough to knock Titanic out of 4th place. At least not yet.

2nd moral: Wikipedia editors have a lot of time on their hands. :nerdy:

oh I only had it on DVD never got it on blu so I will most likely go right to 4K
