I never understood why the F4 were always poor.

I read some FF, of course, but I never really got how they were always so poor. How can someone so smart not be the richest person on earth? I know Mr. Fantastic isn't really interested in being a trillionaire, but surely he cares enough about his family to keep a roof over their heads and live comfortably? I'm guessing some sort of circumstances stopped him from being Bill Gates on steriods, but something really big must have happened to stop someone that smart from being rich.

this is correct currently the only rich ff member is ben because reed fellt he owed ben his full share of the ff profits to partly make amends for causing his disfigurement from the transformation

At current, they are once again extremely well-off ever since around the second half of the "Disassembled" trade and the third "Marvel Knights 4" trade, when they got their phat cash back.

Actually the reason that the FF always SEEM poor is simply because being a super hero is a very expesnive business( why do you think many Marvel AND DC characters are heirs/heiresses to large fortunes?). Their expenses simply eat up their income( lawyers' bills, compensation for buildings or businesses damaged, bystanders injured or even killed) even without Reed's ploughing every available penny into research.
