Sequels Why Spiderman's presence in the MCU needs to be established, why SMCU is not enough

Regardless of which characters have or haven't been introduced, Sony's (controversial) decisions regarding the Osborns, the Stacys, Connors, the Oscorp villains, etc. would restrict future Marvel stories. Adapting the Ditko-Romita years (largely considered to be the Golden age of Spider-Man lore) with all of the major players in tow would be completely out of the question, and this does place HUGE limitations on them creatively.

Is that a huge deal breaker for Marvel though? As Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy have shown, they clearly realize that not everything needs to be an exact or literal translation of the source material.

Marvel wouldn't give us an exact literal translation with their version either. They just don't want to be restricted by the continuity of the version of the Spider-Man everyone hates. It would be like Disney buying Star Wars and a condition of the sale being that they couldn't contradict the expanded universe with future films.

Spider-Man Cameo In ‘Captain America: Civil War’ A Done Deal—Report

By Tanya Diente | December 19, 2014 10:42 AM EST

The recent hack into Sony Pictures' servers revealed the studio's plans to collaborate with Marvel for a third sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man." Likewise, it also detailed the possibility of the superhero making an appearance in "Captain America: Civil War." These plans may seem uncertain, but according to a latest report, studio execs are already planning a meeting to discuss the sequel.

A source told Screengonzo that Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige will meet in January to discuss the future of "The Amazing Spider-Man" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU. The said meeting will reportedly take place at Pinewood Studios, where "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Captain America: Civil War" are believed to have been filming. No further details were provided, but sources said some "good news" will be revealed sometime in February. Likewise, Feige is said to be pleased with where his deal with Sony Pictures is headed.

How the superhero will be featured into the MCU remains uncertain. However, according to the source, one plan is for Spider-Man to make an appearance at the end-credits scene. According to Screengonzo, it would make sense if the character will be featured in "Captain America: Civil War," since the film is scheduled for filming sometime in February or March. It coincidentally links to the mentioned release of the good news in February.

HNGN also thought it's likely for the superhero to be introduced in "Civil War." The movie's directors, brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, will also reportedly helm the sequel. According to Screengonzo writer Josh Johnson, the directors will also "tackle a new Spider-Man trilogy, taking on directing and writing tasks." "They don't have anyone cast yet, but they certainly have a list of potentials they are going over once the deal is done," he said, adding that Marvel is already looking at a list of possible candidates to be the next Spider-Man.

However, it's still uncertain if "The Amazing Spider-Man" will really make an appearance in "Captain America: Civil War." Sony and Marvel have yet to confirm the reports. According to Johnson, the source is the same person who provided the confirmed details of Vision's look in "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

I really hope Spidey stays away from the MCU. I think it's best for everyone involved.

How in any way is it best for everyone involved?

So instead, being best for everyone involved, we get a crappy Sinister Six movie with a female Carnage, Spidey ditching his black suit because he's made fun of, a young spy Aunt May etc? Yes, I can see how that will be best for Sony and the fans. :whatever:

It isn't. Look at how Sony's movies have been going, and look at Marvel's. It's best for everyone for Spider-man to come back home and interact with the characters he's been interacting with for over fifty years. As Dark Raven pointed out, the other option is a crappy Sinister Six movie and numerous other spin-offs no one would ever want to see.

what the hell? what benefit does anyone get with spiderman CONTINUED to be kept separate from the mcu?

that statement defeats the purpose of and ignored the point of this thread. you might as well have not even posted that in here.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Here comes this character with a string of lackluster movies trailing him into this proven winning formula. It's going to muddy the water if it happens.

My personal preference is that franchises don't mix on film. For example, I never want to see Wolverine talking to Stark. I do understand, though, that some like that kind of thing which is fine.

I strongly feel that intermingling Spider-Man with The Avengers would be an unwise, and from a purely personal cinema-audience-member perspective, a silly thing to do.

in the source material all of these characters coexist in the same universe. it should be the same cinematically.

Not to put Wolverine down, but him and Spidey are on completely different levels as superheroes.

If a Wolverine movie was doing as bad as the TASM series, you wouldn't see much interest in the character outside the realm of his films. Merchandise, apparel, etc. would go down the tubes with lackluster outings in theaters.

Contrary to that, even with how abysmal Spidey has been onscreen as of late, his comic books sell the most, Disney makes a killing off his merchandise, you can find Spidey apparel just about everywhere, and I believe even DVD sales aren't all that bad at the moment (I might be wrong about that).

People are clamoring for him to be in the MCU for a reason. There is a genuine love and interest in the character, which is why people want him to be as far from kamikaze Sony as he possibly can.

While you are right that Spidey is obviously bigger than Logan, one could argue that the x men film series' continued success is largely due in part to Hugh Jackman continuously sticking around, and nailing it.
