I wish Denzel Washington was in this....

I'm not itching for Denzel to join this either. I think that he would be too overpowering. The upside of having less familiar actors populate the film is that we get to engage with the characters as opposed to actors whose iconography would overshadow the part that they're playing. This is part of the reason I didn't care for Will Smith's Deadshot.

Sylvester Stallone should've played as Stakar Ogord from GOTG2 in here to coach MBJ for the final fight against BP.

At this point in his career, Denzel is pretty much the modern equivalent of Marlon Brando. He's THE American actor of his era. He's picking up oscar nominations for films people aren't even watching (like Roman J Israel, esq), because actors love him as much as they do Meryl Streep or Daniel Day-Lewis. He carries that much weight as an actor. Not just as a black actor.

If any comic book franchise could entice Denzel to join (he's said in the past he's not really into big blockbuster type films), I have to think it'd be Black Panther. Maybe as the villain for the sequel? That'd be a huge casting coup.

I think it'd be a one-time deal sort of thing (like Robert Redford in Captain America: Winter Soldier). Can't see Denzel making regular appearences in the MCU. He'd probably ask for his character to be killed, just in case they get tempted to ask him back.

Saved for the Sequel :)

(I hope for Octavia Spencer too. Ist too sad Viola Davis is DC already.)

Eh, maybe her DC projects will tank, and then she can come over to the Marvel side. Michael Keaton, the original theatrical Batman, came over to Marvel...

Denzel is truly 1 of a kind. I def agree about the Roman Israel comment. Really weak film though his performance was good; just not Oscar worthy.

Im glad he wasnt in this. I doubt he would ever appear in a comic book film. We need new Black stars, no need to be so reliant on those of 25-30years ago even if they are Legends.

My thoughts exactly.....Denzel is the black Marlon Brando of our generation. I think him as a villain in the sequel similar to Robert Redford in WS would be perfect for this particular franchise.

He def is the type not to be attracted to franchise comic book films, but Black Panther seems to break that barrier. I think if Marvel came to him for a one and done deal as sequel villain - I think he might consider it.

And yes, Oscar gives him noms just because its Denzel. We all know damn well that James Franco should have been nominated for Disaster Artist instead of Denzel in his not-so-great movie. But bc Harry Osbourne couldnt keep his pee pee in his pants in front of older women, they give the nomination to Denzel. No one will argue Denzel is not a great actor.

I think Marlon Brando gave Superman in 1978 a whole credibility that carried over to mainstream audiences. It would be awesome to see Denzel give the same respect for Black Panther 2.

Fun Fact = Denzel been acting since 70's and is finally doing his first sequel in his entire career - The Equalizer 2.

Denzel is amazing, but I know for a fact that many actors would put some other names up there as well in the conversation of best of a generation. Names that would be consistently mentioned.

None of those actors just got their 8th acting nomination from the Academy Awards for Roman J Israel, Esq. A film that bombed with critics and bombed at the box office. He got some strong reviews for his performance (as always), but any other actor on the planet (bar Meryl Streep) would have seen their chances of being nominated die in flames when the Rotten Tomatoe score and the box office recieipts came back.

That's a game changer where you have to acknowledge he's just got that extra bit more respect from his peers. If Denzel can get nominated for that movie, it's clear that actors love this guy beyond reason. Even Daniel Day-Lewis requires his movies to be succesful on some level to get nominated by the Academy (it's not like they are willing to nominate him for Nine). Tom Hanks cannot get arrested by the Academy, despite making a movie that gets nominated for Best Picture almost every year. Hanks has not recieved a nomination in 17 years.

Denzel gets nominated every time he decides not to shoot someone in an action movie.

In every generation, there's always other actors you can point to in the conversation (even in Brando's era, some would point to Montgomery Clift or Laurence Olivier). But Denzel's academy record speaks loud and clear, beyond opinion, that his peers regard him at the very top of the pile. I think he will eventually become the most nominated male actor in Academy Awards history. It''ll be Denzel for men, and Meryl Streep for women.

So many Black actors over the years. Derek Luke comes to mind as one who couldn't get to A-list status.

Seems we literally have had the same guys for the past 20-25 years (Denzel, Will, Morgan, Samuel) and the likes of Don Cheadle, Jamie Foxx, Laurence Fishburne.

There are up and coming black actors making their way to mainstream. Its just that the actors you mentioned have made memorable and amazing films. You need black actors to continue the big hits to get to that 'Denzel' status.

Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Zendaya, Donald Glover - We could be seeing these generation of black actors for many years to come, imo... Idris Elba just hit mainstream not that long ago, a bit too late in his age, but never the less, he is still a huge name.

Many of those may be rising/unknown actors. Loads of Black actors on tv, but not so many when it comes to film. At least knowledgable for larger audiences.

Elba is BIG but I wouldn't say "HUGE". He does seem to do tv and film quite well, but he isn't a box office star or get those Oscar award winning roles which say Will Smith and Denzel were able to get or guarantee. But he still has time.

I believe Boseman/Jordan seem to be competing for that Washington/Smith role of this generation. And of course Daniel Kaluyya and John Boyega finding great work as well.

Unless it's a project he'd directing I don't see Denzel, still seen as a bona fide A-lister irrespective of the box office performance of JRI, taking a supporting role however big the project is.

I suspect when he's near, or over 70 (if he's still acting) we'll see him segue into those types of parts.

Would have been amazing to have Denzel as Black Panther's father. Then Denzel and Angela Bassett as the parents would have been a cool throwback to Malcolm X from 1992.

I think if Denzel would have known how impactful this movie is to black culture, he would have took a 'comic book role', imo.....

Maybe he will be a villain in the sequel ? This movie will be huge box office wise, so maybe he'll be interested. Any black panther fans know any villain that Denzel could play ??

Not as T'chaka. He's too recognizable and would pull me out. And to use Samuel Jackson's logic that he used to against Daniel Kaluya, "Why not get someone from the continent".

I love African American actors, but African actors deserve to be in this just as much as our brothers and sisters abroad. Imo, this movie is perfectly balanced, US star power with authenticity from 1st gen Africans and actually African talent.

I wouldn't mind seeing Denzel getting a role in the franchise. Villain or political delegate or something

I'm fine with Washington not being in this film. He probably wasn't interested, and it's good that they used lesser known actors in comparison, it doesn't bring the film anymore attention then it needs.

Umm....how about the fastest rising movie star we've seen this decade (and shes african american) -

Uh... Huh...

Didn't Samuel L. Jackson state that he wanted a cameo in BP?

Anthony Mackie wanted an appearance as well.

No. Denzel did not and doesn't need to be in this. This film gave opportunities to a lot of incredible, young and obscurely established black talent. I'm happy with John Kani as T'Chaka. He brings African authenticity and a gravitas that the more well known Denzel wouldnt be able to give the charactet, especially with the small size of the role.

That being said if an American actor were to be cast as T'Chaka, my personal favourite choice would have been Michael Jai White but that's just me.

Well Said.

That's cool. It's just a shame that for every Zendaya you could probably point to twelve white actresses in her cohort that are being given opportunities. What other African-American actresses are being given opportunities commensurate with Zendaya? If Kathleen Kennedy is seriously running a feminist shop over there with Star Wars it would be cool if she'd give a leading role to a WOC.
for the under 30 crowd their is Zazie Beetz, zoe kravitz and Yara Shahidi who recently got her own spinoff show and at the moment I can't think of many others

There's a moving description on the CNN website of Denzel at a New York screening of BP this week being in tears at the achievement of the film and pronouncing it'll do a 'billion dollars'.

That true ??? We might get Denzel as the main baddie of Black Panther 2 !!! Woo hoo !! My wish will come true !!

I think this film may be too BIG for even ole Denzel now.

The starpower that Chadwick has now
