iF Magazine Interview with Tobey Maguire

Ah, Angry Tobey rears his ugly head!

I love the guy as Peter Parker, and hope he makes 10 more SM movies, but he comes across in interviews as someone who takes himself just a little too seriously. The interviewer throws a softball like that "two girlfriends" question, and he sounds like he got a bit of a 'tude about it. Why not just give the standard "Man, it was great! The hardest part was not calling Gwen 'MJ' or MJ 'Gwen'" or some such fluff. It wasn't a particularly serious question, but Maguire acts almost offended. But so many actors are odd like that...

He doesn´t sound like that in most interviews, and actually all this press thing can get pretty irritating, you constantly have to answer the same questions again and again, I see why it can rub someone the wrong way. I don´t think he takes himself too seriously, he constantly makes cocky jokes about his looks, but they´re not meant to be taken seriously.

He does have a great sense of humor about himself but at the same time he can be somewhat serious to downright uncooperative when an interviewer doesn't take hints and know when to stop poking. This obviously was a very long interview and likely in a press junket scenario where he was getting hit up for multiple interviews. My guess is he was getting bored with answering the same questions over and over. Plus the guy just kept peppering him with semi-personal questions which he's never keen to answer. I was quite shocked he was so forthcoming in part one. Clearly, somewhere during part two of this interview Tobey had had enough and was ready for it to end and this is where he starts firing warning shots across the port bow in his responses. We'll see how Part 3 wraps up.

I agree that the two girlfriend question could have been fielded more gracefully and humorously. I think if it would have been asked higher in the sequence of questions that it would have resulted in a witty comeback. But primarily, I think he launched on that question because he doesn't like it when the press gives too much of the film away. They kept asking for more and more intimate details about the film. As Tobey mentioned in part one of the interview (and several others), he likes surprises and I think he wants to hold onto a little bit of surprise for the audience seeing the movie.
