If no more middle earth movies are made, what should fill the void?

The Broken Empire could be a good contender. It is an epic fantasy trilogy inspired by the novel A Clockwork Orange.

David Gemmells books could easily be converted. Waylander, Skilgannon or Druss.

Think Ericksens books would struggle to adapt. They were difficult enough to read.

Magician would be good. As could the Farseer trilogy (although it would be different to what most would be expecting). Dresden Files could be given another go.

Why they don't give fantasy as much of a chance as Sci Fi I don't know. If you treat the source material with respect they could do as well. But for some reason they make fantasy for kids.

I've heard that they're again trying to adapt Dragonriders of Pern for a film. If they can finally pull it off this time, then that series could make for a good fantasy film franchise.

I fear if we ever get cinematic Discworld movies, it will be a streamlined americanized version with all its charme lacking

Yes, a good Conan movie this time, please.

The 80s one in kinda got the tone right, even if not the plot, it took it's time and had a mysterious vibe going around, around with an epic soundtrack, things i find necessary for a good Conan movie.

They need to take one of the stories and try staying true to them as much as possible, as well as hiring good artists for some cool set designs.

Anyone thinks video game adaptations have the potencial to bring some good expansive worlds? Warcraft is right now in development, if it's successful, i wonder if studios will start looking at the likes of Elders Scrolls, Diablo, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda or even Chrono Triger.

The originals were great, so was Red Sonja.

I like Conan the Destroyer, even though it's considered a crappy movie.

I don't know about the new one...Arnold is getting old. He seems "tired", if you know what I mean? I wish they could make a new Conan movie based on the original stories.

Wouldn't mind a HBO series.

I saw the BBC miniseries with Sean Astin (Colour of Magic) recently…and it was..okay. It had good intentions but it's really hard to capture the sense of humor of Terry. You'll need the right director for that because the show was…alright.

Maybe its the audiobook but Dragonflight was hurting my brain. Maybe it's a book that you have to read rather than to listen because it lost me in its dull characterizations.

Who's the best director to capture the feel? Gilliam (another Terry lol)? Burton? del Toro? Jonze? Wes Anderson? Jeunet? Maybe even Besson (5th element, anyone?)?

Besson? Nope, that ship has sailed. Also, his humor is too French, which tends to be slapsticky. Gilliam will never do a major studio film again, at this point. Burton is a total hit and a miss lately, but maybe he could make it work.

Isn't Star Wars taking it's place? It goes off without a hitch as it picks up the very next holiday season after Hobbit3 is over.

WB could also do an original book cut of the film and put it out as it's basically free money. Just cut down the trilogy into one 2 to 4 hour single movie.

I've heard the First Law books by Joe Abocrombie is really good, but how dense are they? I mean, would a TV show do them justice, or a film series?

Right now, i think TV is the best medium for good fantasy series, though the fact that many of the TV book adaptations start delivering different endings to their stories might worry fans of the original books.

In the hands of a good screenwriter/director, you could pull off the First Law trilogy on film. But a tv series might be somewhat more fitting. They're not massive like A Song of Ice and Fire, but they do have the multiple POV storylines running concurrently that perhaps a show would give more breathing room to.

Though, you'd also run into some problems there, because after the first three books it's a trilogy of spin-offs, set years later, in different countries, and featuring a cast that is often made up of either new characters or supporting characters from the original trilogy elevated into a main role.

But still, the series as a whole is very doable in either format.

So I read the first Wheel of Time book, Eye of the World.

I can see why Hollywood hasn't touched this series yet:

- It's well written but overwritten, so that can be bypassed during the adaptation process. But the main problem is how..derivative it is of Tolkien. Of course, his Middle Earth saga casts a huge shadow over the fantasy genre, but boy, Robert Jordan wears his influences on his sleeve. Eye of the World is almost like a remake/reboot of Lord of the Rings through the eyes of a different author. I've heard the series becomes its own after a few books, but I don't know if I can stand any more books with 600-700 plus pages of meandering proses.

Wheel of Time: I say NAY!

Try Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson. The comparison with Wheel of Time is night and day. I've wiki'd WoT and the later stuff does sound interesting but the early books didn't keep my attention.

i thought that maybe assassin's creed could fill the void, but who knows what's going to happen with that.

an ezio trilogy would be boss though.

To answer the title question -- hopefully some new movies that don't look like cartoons.
