CC: Now that you say that, there has been quite a bit of talk about THE HOBBIT being made into one or two movies...possibly by Peter Jackson. If that happens, do you see that as another opportunity to dive back into that world and detail?

HS: Yes. Definitely. Peter and I both want to make the movie. We've talked about it. We really want to do it, so we're hoping it all works out. I would love to return to Middle Earth and write more music for that world.

CC: In the back of your mind, have already begun that process?

HS: Yes.

CC: Sort of difficult not to, I'd think!

HR. Yes.

As for The Hobbit, Sloan confirmed that MGM was in advanced talks with Peter Jackson to make two movies based on JRR Tolkien's "prequel" to "The Lord of the Rings."

The first would be a direct adaptation of The Hobbit, and the second would be drawn from "footnotes and source material connecting 'The Hobbit' with 'Lord of the Rings,'" he explained.

An MGM spokesman emphasized that negotiations with Jackson are still in progress, and that production isn't likely until 2008 or even 2009.

I guess we can scrap the actors from returning with that time table... but I still think it makes for a terrific idea to have an adaptation and then a direct prequel to LOTR

and the second would be drawn from "footnotes and source material connecting 'The Hobbit' with 'Lord of the Rings,'" he explained.
...Uh...is that really necessary ?

I'd actually prefer that they make 2 movies out of the book if it means laying more sub-plots that tie in with LOTR and also make the overall story a bit more dramatic and "grown up" if you will.

I like The Hobbit as a fun little read but let us remember that the book started as a children story and therefore, does not have a lot of deep, dramatic moments (not until 3/4 into the story at least). It would really benefit from some additions to the original material.

I want to see him take on a great sci-fi story...maybe even one from a novel and made into an epic film. I KNOW he would do it justice.

I'd like to see P.J do a sci fi movie too. Maybe When Worlds Collide or a sci-fi book that has never been made into a movie. A new series to make Lucas sweat that it could be really good.

New Line Passes on Jackson for The Hobbit
Source: TheOneRing.net November 20, 2006

"The Lord of the Rings" fansite TheOneRing.net has received an official statement from Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh about The Hobbit. The two have made it clear that New Line has passed them up, due to Wingnut Films' lawsuit against the studio regarding "The Fellowship of the Ring," and that the studio is looking for a new director to take on The Hobbit and a mystery second "Lord of the Rings" prequel. Here's a clip:

Several years ago, Mark Ordesky told us that New Line have rights to make not just The Hobbit but a second "LOTR prequel", covering the events leading up to those depicted in LOTR. Since then, we've always assumed that we would be asked to make The Hobbit and possibly this second film, back to back, as we did the original movies. We assumed that our lawsuit with the studio would come to a natural conclusion and we would then be free to discuss our ideas with the studio, get excited and jump on board. We've assumed that we would possibly get started on development and design next year, whilst filming The Lovely Bones. We even had a meeting planned with MGM executives to talk through our schedule.

However last week, Mark Ordesky called Ken and told him that New Line would no longer be requiring our services on the Hobbit and the LOTR 'prequel'. This was a courtesy call to let us know that the studio was now actively looking to hire another filmmaker for both projects.

Um thats all well and good but didn't Sloan for MGM pretty much wanted Peter Jackson. MGM has i would think just as much weight as New Line. Awe yes New Line holds distributing rights. While MGM can make the movie. I'm sorry New Line for you messed up for you have had nothing bud duds since Rings ended. MGM can hold out a long time for New Line can't make the film for MGM owns the film rights and Sony owns them.

Now there are other great directors out there that is for sure but non with the passion that Pete would have for these characters. But to be fare look at the Harry Potter movies. They have several new directors its just that Pete had alot of magic and well an Oscar for the Rings movies. New Line rejecting and oscar winner director. Can count out the Ian's and Howard Shore most likely. New Line knew nothing about Rings until Pete braught the passion in his script writing to them. No directors could do that.

The only decent writers that i could see trying it out would be the Pirates Of The Caribbean geniouses. Ted and Terry.

Its either PJ or no one else, this is a sure blockbuster hit and New Line is acting like a bunch of fools.

Get Peter Jackson, or leave it the **** alone. It's that simple.

And just like that, whatever excitement and anticipation I had for "The Hobbit" and the LOTR prequel is gone. :csad:

You know Im still betting it gets made and PJ does it, either that or it wont get made at all. I cant imagine another writer or director even thinking about touching it, not to mention any of the cast coming back without Fran, Phillipa and PJ there, New Line has to know this. It sounds to me like they were trying to force PJ to drop the lawsuit, but didnt expect Jackson to take it to the fans.

Either Jackson does the movie(s), or it shouldn't be made at all. :down

I have a vague memory of Ian McKellan saying he'd only reprise his role if Jackson returned... anyone else remember reading something like this?

Because if that's true... then really... seriously... they shouldn't make it. I can sort of imagine why they'd think they could do without the same director, but recasting Gandalf?

damn this annoys me. not only no peter jackson but no hope of the silmarillion- i love those damn elves

Jackson is overrated, IMO. I am curious who they are looking at to direct, and most importantly write. the LOTR films were extremely melodramatic and the photography was gawdy and over the top. The first film was the best by far and the second 2 just felt rushed and forced. Frodo was competely miscast...Elijah Wood? Come on, atleast get a brit (Martin Freeman, maybe?) Sure they nailed some of the cast with McKellen, Lee and Ian Holm. But, then you have Viggo...ugh. He is a fine actor, but he is too much of a sissy for Aragorn. Daniel Day-Lewis would have been a better choice...its a shame he said no, three times. The design of the films were pretty good, but I felt a lot of the lighting was too synthetic and didn't really feel natural. Sean Bean was great too. I think a new director could be a good thing. The most important thing this new director will have to do is to distance this film from the Jackson trilogy. Especially if none of the cast is going to return. Continuity is going to be a major issue, so I say just go with a new visual style that does not invoke the imagery from the trilogy. But, I doubt anyone has the balls to do this.

The movie is going to bomb without P.J.

And most people loved his LOTR's movies. I doubt any movie studio is heading for that 3 percent of moviegoers who didn't like the film.

PJ is known for making LOTR. LOTR isn't know for being made by PJ.
And? Outside of the LOTR's films I have yet to see a great fantasy film and they were all flops. I'm sure most movie goers don't know P.J by name but his take on the novels is well known and well loved. The movies made tons of money on great word of mouth and sold tons of DVD's. I seriously doubt that the actors that they need to come back will come back without the original director. It will suck without P.J period.
