"You only get one shot at life. Why waste it on sleep? One of the virtues of never sleeping. I live my dreams. Besides, there's plenty of time to sleep when you're dead."
I would very happily give up sleep to experience a conscious lifespan that was 25-30% longer.
I remember reading a sci-fi short story about this somewhere. Basically a small group of genetically-engineered people who don't need to sleep, and how the rest of the human populace mistrusts them and treats them badly.
Also an X-Files episode where a few soldiers were part of an experiment to free them of the need to sleep, but they all go insane because their brains can't handle being without the REM state.
Sleep isn't just about recovering strength. You know guys, there is research in development to invigorate a body such that it no longer needs sleep, with soldiers in mind. I believe without a doubt the results will be disastrous.. Sleep is not wholly understood; it is more than some supplemental mechanism.
waking up, looking at alarm clock, and realizing its saturday so you turn over and go back to sleep feeling >>>>>>>>> not needing sleep and being freshly rested 24/7
