I sure hope it's not a mistake not having ILM do the special effects for Thor like they did for Iron Man. You *know* you're going to get great effects with ILM - It's *hopeful* if you're going to get them with BUF, even though they did Avatar. ILM has a very long track record of excellence. I don't know why Marvel/Disney felt they needed to change.

Buf work on Avatar was minimal compared to what Framstore , ILM and WETA didn. Nevertheless they are quite solid in their work and are know to create quite complex shots.

A common reason why big studios opt to choose other studios instead of the big ones is simply because of the huge amount of work those VFX studios need to do . Look at WETA. Post LOTR they are doing shots for several movies. Once something like Avatar comes along , the entire studio is doing the shots for one movie.
It could very well been a case of ILM just having alot of projects currently on their slate that they wouldn't be able to handle the VFX of Thor. Out of my head i think ILM is currently doing work on both Potter movies , definately being the lead vendor on Transformers 3 .

Edit : I honestly think that people need to ditch the elitist attitude of saying just because ILM or WETA are involved , the VFX will automatically be great.
It's the director who determines the look of the VFX. For example when someone like David Fincher uses digital domain you're getting Benjamin Button and when someone like Stephen Sommers uses digital domain you're getting GI.JOE.

well you do have to remember ilm is a very popular and busy studio they dont have the time to do alot of films all the time. If their workers are set on other films already. I am sure who ever is doing the effects for thor will be good.

BUF has a fairly impressive resume of films, including BB and TDK, SM3, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and of course Avatar.

It's really all about keeping costs under control, and timing. ILM does a great job, but they are alot more expensive. Also they don't always get it right. ILM did the effects on Ang Lee's Hulk and the first Fantastic Four, neither of which were that impressive effects wise.

yea some of the smaller houses have been doing solid work on films and i am sure kenneth/marvel studios picked proper production houses and all that and spent money wisely.
