Interesting breaking news about Puerto Rico.

This entire thing is such a giant pile of bull I am interested to see if anyone tries to defend it.

It's clearly an attempt to increase the Democratic Coalition of voters by using intentionally confusing ballots.

Puerto Rico has voted on statehood multiple times, the latest of which was 1998 - it was rejected everytime and has the ability to be put on the Puerto Rican ballet at any time. When it is on that ballot, it is asked "Do you want to Puerto Rico to become an American state", on this ballot, it is asked "Do you want to change Puerto Rico's current status".

At right now I guess I don't care too much, but do want to say that US Congress has the power to create a new state out of Puerto Rico without the legislative approval of Puerto Ricans. So if an informal "poll" is written in a way which a public relations machine could interpret that Puerto Rico would ok with idea of "changing status", perhaps statehood, Congress can vote to approve it without any legislative declaration from Puerto Rico.

Congress is doing a bang up job of circumventing the will of the people of Puerto Rico...who DO NOT want to become the 51st state....

Yep, all in the name of a few more votes. This is gerrymandering on crack....lmao.

I just love this Congress. It's like they are always reading the minds of the American Puerto Rican people.

Congress has never been about the "will of the people" for a loooooong time.

It's really disgusting to hear what's happening, and how it's happening. My understanding is that they've written the ballots, and set up the voting, in complex and confusing manners and complicated wording to purposely convolute and ensure the outcome.

I've never met a single Puerto Rican who has wanted to see Puerto Rico reach statehood. Not a single one, and I have an entire half of my family who is born, raised, and live there.

Puerto Rican statehood is going to be met with opposition from those wanting Puerto Rico as an independent nation.

The Independence movement is less than 3%.

I'm a Pro-Statehood Puerto Rican.

1998 vote DID NOT reject statehood, but the formulas presented for a future plebiscite.

We are American citizens.

Are you sure about that? I've lived in PR all my life I'm Pro-Statehood, along with a little over 50% of the population. . .

Yeah.

Now, maybe I'm just in touch with the Independentistas, every Puerto Rican I have met and discussed it with have told me they would prefer if the U.S. stayed out of they're affairs and weren't Pro-Statehood. Not that there's hate, just a desire to stay independent.

For what it's worth, I am part Puerto Rican. My mother's entire family is from there. I'm not saying that I'm speaking the gospel, just saying that I'm not coming from left field here.

I'm not Anti- or Pro- statehood, still kinda on the fence. I don't know if I truly have a place to make a judgement since I'm sorta in the middle. I'm an American born and raised latino. My problem isn't so much with the reach for statehood, but, the reporting I've seen. I hear that the balloting is purposely written to confuse, never mentioning statehood but still having it on the table.

If the reporting is correct, and I've heard nothing to the contrary...then it's a underhanded way to go about it.

what a funny ballot might look like

what not cleaning out the old elections' punches can do.

We do NOT need an odd number of states, damn it.

It'll totally **** up our flags. Everyone with a flag patch on their uniform will have to get a new one... It just logistically doesn't work. :oldrazz:

DC needs to just pick a state to join. I nominate Nebraska, it'll make it one of the few "worth it" states.

It's all a plot by liberals to help on election day.

Anyone who suggests making DC a state is either openly defiant, or completely ignorant, of the purpose of the district.

A plot by liberals?

okay...

I mean, if it'll help them out (and I assume you mean liberal politicians, and not generally speaking), why wouldn't they be interested in doing it? Doesn't sound devious or anything at face value.

As I said before...it is gerrymandering on crack.

They all do it....they just don't usually add a state to do it...lol
