Alright I wish I would have opened up this topic before as this is actually drawing to its end now, but io9 as you may have heard, is running a series of voting matchups to determine the "greatest" Science Fiction film of all time. There are matchups between two films and over the course of day there is a poll to determine the winner. Now this started out as bullcrap as a number of the films on the bracket weren't even science fiction films, or at least there were films left off that should have been there instead (TDK? really? there was some tech but really?)

Some of the matchups have been nearly impossible for me to make a decision. Last week in the Elite 8, one matchup came down to The Empire Strikes Back vs. 2001: A Space Odyssey, literally my #1 and 2 favorite movies respectively.

Along the way there have been a huge number of upsets and other sites have made postings complaining about it.

Its gotten down to the final four now. Star Wars vs. The Empire Strikes Back, and then Blade Runner vs. Serenity.

Now that second matchup is very suprising. How the hell did Serenity make it to the final four? I think its a good movie but to made it farther than so many other films is kind of preposterous in my book.

I would like to see Blade Runner win, but clearly one of the Star Wars films will.

Serenity?

Wow, Whedon fans are really something...

I know right? I mean its a pretty good movie but seriously...ugh.

The Dark Knight really shouldn't be there. There are a couple other films that shouldn't either.I may be lynched for this but I prefer ESB to Blade Runner.

I think not to have films like,

The Trifecta of Technological Terror
A Clockwork Orange - it does deal with a fictitious future that cannot exist without fictitious science, so I guess it's sci-fi isn't it.
1984 - most debatable of the three as to whether it is sci-fi or not. In it's defense, in relation to this, it does deal with a future of instances of horrific science and technology in addition to abusive power gone wrong.
Brazil - Brazil is like 1984 on sci-fi drugs. Probably the easiest of these three to argue as being sci-fi.

to name a few, is a travesty.

If you wouldn't want to consider 1984 sci-fi you could probably add Twelve Monkeys if you wanted to keep a Trifecta of Technological Terror in place.

In my opinion, the most common sci-fi final four probably is:

Blade Runner
Star Wars
Star Trek
2001: A Space Odyssey

with the following in the running:

Aliens
Terminator
The Matrix
Total Recall

I don't specify which of a series it should be because I think which of a series is best needs to be sorted out beforehand in a head-to-head vote. Let's be honest, the Star Wars movies are one story, The Matrix movies are one story, The Terminator movies are one story. The only reason they are not considered as such is because no one can sit in a theater for 14 hours.

If you caught the PEOPLE magazine list, the Top 5 All-Time sci-fi are:
1. Star Wars
2. E.T.
3. Avatar
4. The Matrix
5. Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind

That's not a bad list but I imagine a lot of people will have problems with E.T. being 2nd all-time and Avatar 3rd.

Again. I was a little disappointed that A Clockwork Orange, 1984, nor Brazil made the list... especially A Clockwork Orange.

Let's hope all this debate means that we haven't even seen great sci-fi yet. In all honesty, some of the best sci-fi stories I've heard in awhile came from video games but we should leave that alone since successful video game adaptations is a completely different discussion.

12 Monkeys, Brazil and, A Clockwork Orange were all part of the bracket at one time.

1984 definitely is Science Fiction, just because its technology is more rooted and plausible doesnt make it not such. When the book was written it was of course dealing with the future and when the movie came out, it could be taken more as an alternate history.

LOL @ Serenity in the final 4.I really hope Blade Runner ends this reign of terror.I liked Serenity, but greatest Sci-Fi?no.

I'm not going to go out of my way to make sure Blade Runner wins, but WOW! Serenity is winning!

Blade Runner is def better, but if Serenty wins the tournament, that is awesome. Mostly cause it will anger people and that is funny.

WOW! The list if films that Serenity has beaten is monstrous. Blade Runner is prob losing, too. Does it have enough to pull it off against TESB?

I actually think the brackets for this tourney were pretty good. Look at all that were in the tourney, and I only take exception to Spider-Man and The Dark Knight being in it. Otherwise, not a bad list.

So Serenity eked out a win over The Empire Strikes Back.

I feel like I need a shower from all the fanwanking that I was showered with upon viewing that website.
