Iron Man IRON MAN CG article

Yes, IM used CGI, but it's the way they use it (which blends seemlessly with real suits) that makes the special effects compelling. They said that the best F/X is the one you cannot see readily, and IM fits that description.

There was also the issue that Downey found the practical suit restrictive to his acting, as explained by Hickel. “Winston’s guys made these beautiful suits that were faithful to the Iron Man design, but they were hard to move in. We told Robert Downey Jr. if he couldn’t get into the pose or move the way he wanted to, we could add the suit digitally. When he saw that, he didn’t want to wear the practical suit at all, to the point where there were times when we almost wanted to bribe him to put the practical suit on.

He liked not wearing it, so we wound up doing more shots than we anticipated. But the bottom line was, he was more comfortable and felt better, so presumably his performance was better. For us, it’s all about making the performance better and not encumbering the actor.”

stan winston my ass. i knew this would happen .the movement in the suit was almost zero. i am not even suprised.basicly fans would now need to be angry because one year ago they said that its all about the real suit. but hey the movie is making money so we can not bash it.

I had no idea that scene was CGI :wow:
that's probably a first for me. Excellent FX
hahah :woot:

it was obvious CGI IMO. i am not saying that it looked obvious CGI. but how would he move like that in the real suit? the only reason why i knew it was CGI was because of the movement.

I heard Batman's suit was also cumbersome to wear early, but it got progressively better later on. Perhaps for IM2, Winston will make a suit that has better movement and more comfortable to wear in, and RDJ will be able to get coaxed to wear it more often.

maybe. but from a technical stadpoint i dont know how. the movement just can not be very fast in a hard mechanical suit.

I think it might be done if Winston changes the material on parts of his armor that needs mobility, like elbow, knee, neck, arm, etc. It will also at least help RDJ move more freely.

OMG,those pics are awesome! It actually looks like Robert is wearing the mark 3.

then they will to use soft rubber parts. i dotn know how. it will be better since everytime its better.

Well, with millions of money at their disposal, I'm sure they can come up with something.

Wouldn't the very fact that you couldn't tell it was CGI until you deduced through reasoning that it had to be mean that it wasn't obvious CGI?

If a fan has to logically deduce that "hey that must be CGI because the real suit is too bulky" then the CGI has done it's work. It's fooled you into thinking it's real until you stop and think. If it was obvious CGI you would have seen the shot and imediately gone "oh that's definitely animated."

I think the close shot of Hulk screaming in the new Hulk Trailer (the one during the day, not at the Abomb. fight) is obvious CGI because you can tell right away that's it's animated. With Iron Man you couldn't.

the shaders were real. if iron man was just standing there i would think that he was real. but because of the wuick movements i knew it was CGI.

What's the point? The CGI Iron man was near perfect. Many scenes I thought were done in the suit turned out to be CGI. I never felt he was just "pasted" in.

I know, and that's what I'm saying. You didn't look at Iron Man and think "wow that's so obviously animated, it looks fake," you didn't think it was CGI until you saw how well he was moving and that made you realize that it must be CGI because he couldn't move that well in the suit.

Which means that you only knew it was CGI because you knew how limited the suit was. And I'm saying that because of that, it wasn't obvious it was CGI, the only reason you knew certain parts were CGI is because you knew information beforehand that most of the audience doesn't.

What I'm trying to say is it's not obvious CGI in the way that the Hulk looks like obvious CGI in this shot

with hulk it is different. iron man suit exists. hulk not.

why would anyone would want to bash the movie just because apparently they used more CGI instead of a real suit?

were we supposed to be angry because apparently there are no 'real'iron man suits?

its pretty simple. one year ago when we found out that the suits were build it was ''i like jon because he is using real suits, this is amazing. we will see RDJ in a real suit doing incredible action''.

^^ i still think that's a pretty flimsy reason to get upset about the movie.

And according to that article, there are practical suits built. They are just not using it as much.

And in my opinion, fans like John, not because he supposed to have built a pratical Iron man suit. They like him because he made a pretty damn good superhero movie.

anyone readed the whole article? they cheated a lot of times. even with the CGI model tehy couldnt do all the poses and movement. so tehy made a system where the parts bended together.
they actually cheated how the suit moves. i am not having a problem with this because they suit that was builded was just to much like a robot.

Wait...what!?!? You mean thats not actually the Hulk screaming?? DAMN IT ALL!! :hoboj:

I read it. I don't think you can use the word "cheat" though. I mean this is not a sporting event, it's a movie. As long as what they use works, I don't care if they had to sacrifice a goat to a pagan god to get it done.

Pretty much. It would also be a flimsy reason to expect a good movie a year ago, so whatever.

They still took the time to build high quality physical suits. You can only plan so much.

The entire terrorist scene was 100 % digital... but how else are you supposed to do it? A man in a suit is simply not going to have the speed to make those twists and turns moving his arms left and right and such. And Iron Man probably spent about ten seconds on the ground in that entire scene before taking right off again. It had to be digital. What makes it obvious is that the metal is too shiny and too CGI'ey for lack of a better term. But you won't see much better quality anywhere else with that stuff. And it was much less campier than Tranformers but that's because of the simple colors. I had no problems with any of the shots really because that's the best you are going to find anywhere at this time.
