Watching that collection of Freeze puns makes me realize that Schumacher actually did the same thing with Freeze that he did with Two-Face.

In both cases, their very first appearances are actually quite scary and menacing. Two-Face's monologue, Freeze's cold (NO pun intended!) stares as he freezes the cops and his "Mercy?" response.

Then, seconds later, like a switch was thrown, they both turn into gag machines.

Sad. They both had serious potential.

I don't think it's possible for me to be any more disappointed with Schumacher's Two-Face and Freeze. You're right...there was some SERIOUS potential there...and it was destroyed.

When I first heard about the casting of Tommy Lee Jones I knew how about perfect he was for the role because I thought he was going to be playing the Two-Face from the animated series and thought Tim Burton was still directing.

In this video from 3:34 to 4:14 is a great example of the potentional Arnold had with Freeze and how Tim Burton would have protrayed him.

A lot of Schumacer's cast would've done a superb job with their characters.

Tommy Lee Jones in The Dark Knight? Oscars. See: The Fugitive, No Country for Old Men and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.

Uma Thurman? See Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Gattaca.

Jim Carrey? Uhm..... ok. But still at least he wouldn't have been so obviously flamming, if you know what I mean. Infact Nolan could use Riddler's sexuality as a tool to drive the character forward?

Schwarzenegger? Who better to gun down people non-chalantly?

I agree with what was said above that Freeze had a potential. The typecast Arnold movie character who is ruthless and cold mighty badass with little or none emotions fits extremely well with Freeze. All they had to do was to let him play the role the way he knows best and they ruined it because they decide it would be better to make him a cheap-joke machine.

This thread just once again shows exactly what kills a great serious character: misplaced puns themed around something pertaining to the character. There are only a few characters that should use puns like this in batman, foremost being the joker. The closest thing to a pun I would tolerate with Mr. Freeze is some cop telling him to freeze, and him starting to laugh maniacally at the irony.
