"the best director in the world" right now ?

Following/Memento/Insomnia/Batman Begins/The Prestige and now The Dark Knight .

Just read this article and if I don't claim him the "best" he is definitively one of the best and my "fave" one

Your thoughts about his filmography and career people ?

Do you agree with this critic ?

I'm not sure if I'd say he's THE best, but I'd certainly put him up in there in that elite group of my top directors - Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lynch, the Coens - even though I've yet to see "The Dark Knight".

Hes in Europe they dont get the movie till next week.....your eyes may now return to there un bulged postition. :)

Nolan is awesome. He's had a streak of really good movies including BB and TDK.

I personally would say he is the best, but to please everyone I'll say he's definately in the top 10 and rising QUICKLY.

I don't think that's a question that can be answered.

Well, actually I think it is a question that can be answered - and the answer is 'no'. The question that can't be answered is 'Who is the best director in the world?'

I think a director needs to get to a certain point in his career before you can start judging it. For example, when Tarantino made Pulp Fiction one might have championed him as one of the greatest living directors. By the time he made Kill Bill and Death Proof... :whatever: Nolan is nowhere near that time in his career yet (to be fair to him, neither is Tarantino). He's a young director.

Instead of talking about the 'best' we can only really talk about favourites, and really even out of the older respected directors who have decades of movies behind them, it's still down to taste.

I'd definitely place Nolan in my shortlist of favourite living directors along with, just off the top of my head

Fincher
Gilliam
Scorsese
Cronenberg
Cameron (James)
Cuaron

But I'm sure a lot of you will disagree with some names on that list - just like many would disagree about Nolan.

Its still VERY early in his career to be calling him the best. He has yet to have a bad film so he's on the right track to getting there.

Nolan is the best director in fiction right now at least, hands down.

Best is subjective isn't it?
I don't have a BEST director because a crappy director can make an amazingly awesome film and a good director can make a mistake and have a bad one...it happens.
He is however a VERY VERY good director, one of my personal favorites...he directed my second favorite film ever, Memento...and I love Batman Begins and The Dark Knight so yeah the verdict is in: hes awesome

Agree with you on the latter - not so certain on the former...

Hmm..."very poor choice of words HAHA"...I'll change "bad" to mediocre.

Lynch is an acquired taste and the same can be said about the Coens. Paul Thomas Anderson stays exclusively to the more adult drama type films. Speilberg is on the decline in my opinion but Nolan is working to the type of quality mass appeal director that Speilberg is/was and to a lesser extent Ridley Scott.

Memento is probably one of my top three if not fave movie ever :woot:

What I like with movies from Nolan like Memento and The Prestige for instance is that you can watch them a lot of times and litterally rediscovering them each time because of some details you didn't notice the first time around .

I love the whole thematic of schizophrenia in Chris' filmography .

You can enjoy his flicks on different levels and always find something to (over) analyze which makes you enjoying the said movie even more .

The Prestige was terrific (except perharps the very end which was "too much" for my taste) last year and I like how he always cast people well for each role (Katie Holmes probably the exception here :oldrazz:)

I agree with the notion of "subjective", that's why I ve said "my fave" and not "the best" to me :yay:

Out of that list of films he has made,Batman Begins is the worst one,in my opinion.
It didn't wow me like it did other people, but I've said many times before,I do appreciate it after muktiple viewings.
I say the worst one based on first viewing, that's what counts for a film towards me - the enjoyment factor :oldrazz:

The Prestige is the best one I've seen on that list, followd by Memento.
When The Dark Knight hits the UK,I will update my list of favourite Nolan films :yay:

I don't know if he is the best, but he is also my favorite. Think about it, without him TDK would never have happened. He was more than a director- he wrote & produced it.
He is certainly one of the best in the industry but I do not know if he is the best. I wouldn't put it pass him, though

I would say hes one of the best new directors out there, I think he will have a great career!

I believe he is definitely the most consistent. Only 6 films so far in his entire career, and all of them have been good to fantastic. (Didn't really care of Insomnia, but it wasn't bad and it was his first time working with a large studio.)

Only two things assure my butt in a theater seat: Pixar, and Christopher Nolan. Both have the greatest amount of integrity in Hollywood right now, I believe.

I would definately awith you there Anita. In my opinion, neither have made a bad film yet.

Christopher Nolan is a God simply because he seems to be one of the only comic book directors who can actually fit more than one villain in a movie & do it exceptionally well.

Greaty choice Toy Story 2 is one of my top 5 movies ever alongside Memento :woot:

I can't wait for both Toy Story 3 and Batman III for 2010
