Is it as important as the comic?

So...is this movie's legacy gonna be that it flopped and WB is no longer making R rated comic book adaptations? :csad:

Watchmen is one of the most important and influential comic books of all time. So...what about the movie?

1. Is the movie also important in the genre or was it released too late?
2. Did another movie already accomplish the task?
3. Where does the movie rank in the genre?

Discuss.

1. I think that it's a step forward but in terms of it's importance, The Dark Knight kind of stole that spotlight a year ago. After The Dark Knight, a lot of studios, DC Comics and WB specifically, said they were going to try and make their future superhero films more dark and brooding after seeing the success of The Dark Knight. That right there is an example of importance.

2. Again, The Dark Knight kind of beat Watchmen to the punch.

3. If I had to rank, I'd say it's in the top 10 or so.

The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
Iron Man
Spider-Man 2
Watchmen
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The Incredible Hulk
Spider-Man
Batman (1989)
Superman The Movie

When the next generation looks back at the decade where comic book movies became more for adults, I think "Watchmen" will be a commonly cited example. But, I suspect that is about as influential as it will be. :(

I had longer wondered if TDK's success would help or hurt Watchmen. Would it help by preparing audiences for darker, more violent, and more adult "superhero" films? Or would it hurt it by taking away the shock value? Looks like the second option prevailed, if anything.

Agreed, I think that Watchmen is probably only going to be seen as a progressive step in a certain direction, rather than the catalyst of it all.
