Is it me, or does Christain Bale have no acting Range?

I believe in Christian Bale.

yea so do I, but that doesn't change the fact he has shown me much outside of his usual roles.

The Oscar doesn't deserve Christian Bale.
I mean, an award that rewards Halle Berry as best actress doesn't deserve any credibility. At all.

 please tell me your joking. theirs nothing really great about actor who can use a different accent, alot of people do it.

Dude If you dont know how to post....dont. no wonder you have 4,8?? posts. Put it together and its probably like 14 real posts!!

Well, when you look at most of his roles, yes, he's portrayed the same characters - but, he has done stuff like Newsies and Empire - I don't think it's a matter of him NOT being able to pull comedy or other stuff off, it's the fact nobody wants him for that.

Look at the comedic side of American Psycho for instance, he's got it, just like Brad Pitt had to share sooner or later.......

does Christian Bale have no acting range or does he just gravitate towards certain kinds of characters? just because he chooses not to take a certain kind of role doesn't mean he can't do that role.

and why is this in the TDK spoilers forum?

she was amazing in Monsters Ball dude, You will find very few critics or people who disagree with that.

Just because he doesnt go between extremes doesnt mean he has no range. His character in The Prestige was vastly different than the racist a**hole he played in Shaft(I actually disliked Bale for awhile he played his part so well).

it may be a thought-provoking point. for a while. but one could tell if an actor is indeed gifted with great acting skills

perhaps production companies aren't ready to cast bale in movies of the opposite genre. they may find it hard to see bale in a role like Tom Hanks' in Sleepless in Seattle

He wasn't so bad in Reign of Fire. Hell, he was a softie in that one. Hardly psychologically troubled, IMO.

Also, in Batman, we *know* that he's got problems because we're Batman fans, but really--how "psychologically troubled" did Bruce Wayne really come off? We first see him as a bit listless and lost, then focused, then he's arrogant and a bit of a goof, then he's a monster when he puts on his outfit.

The one consistent thread that runs through all of his roles is one thing: intensity. And I think his intensity is really noticeable because he's never really done any true comedy.

Well I've nearly noticed all the characters Chrstian Bales has played, are in the same exact mold, Psychologically troubled individuals. Hes never played anything else really, and its kind of getting rather curious. Makes you wonder if he can portray different characters, can he do more comedic roles, can he play a geekish character, can he play a sensitive character, and etc? I mean at this point, its obvious while hes a good actor, he needs to expand his roles, as I think he can win an oscar, he just needs to show the academy something different then the mentally troubled indivudual, hes been playing in alot of his movies.

I agree, Bale does have a one range character...

But I definately think he could pull off other characters...he was pretty damn funny when he was pretending to be drunk in Begins...:)

So am I the only guy here that saw the New World? Seriously, that movie invalidates the whole thread. The man's performance as a shy and loving farmer pretty much held the last half of the movie together. I mean while we're at it, why dont we say Jim Carrey has no range because a majority of his films are just him giving a wacky over-the-top performance?

I saw The New World as well, and I have to say I found his performance just a bit unremarkable. Definitely not his best work, IMO, but certainly not his worst.

Who cares how he is in other movies as long as he plays Bruce/Batman right then we have nothing to worrt about.

I find this argument can only apply if you only start with his most seen and talked about work, only over the last few years.

This argument could be made to say that Cary Grant was a one trick pony. It only applies if you are not willing to watch them outside their most main stream work. Also it goes to the fact that Bale himself has almost our grown the concept of characters. His persona he has crafted does not allow most to see past the fact that he is Christian Bale. Thus no matter his role, they look more towards the obvious similarities to his past work then what else he is doing. The range in his persona is what makes him great. His ability to switch from funny to serious to sarcastic is quite something. Same with Mifune who many today would say only played one character.

One most also factor in that people cast Bale in roles that the audience want to see him in. I love with people do the whole "Dreamcast" exercise and cast actors in very typed cast manor and then complain when this happens in actual film. Ian Mckellen has pretty much played the same role for 5 years. Is that because he can't act? Of course not, but that is the roles he is fit to play.

Bale is one of the most gifted actors of his generation. He may also be to good for his own good.

I saw The New World and Harsh Times back-to-back and it was amazing to see how different Bale was in both movies. I saw them with my sister and she couldn't believe it was the same actor. Bale is extemely gifted and has enormous range. Anyone that thinks differently has not been paying attention or is not familiar with his filmography.

he was in Little Women.

Thank you. What does his roles outside of Batman have to do with, well, Batman?! I think he's a fine actor but regardless, all I care about is that he nails Bruce Wayne/Batman and he has done that. His roles outside of Batman is irrelevant.
