At the Tokyo Gameshow, Tecmo announced that they are in the early development stages of a new entry in the Dead or Alive fighting game franchise, and showed off some early pre-alpha footage of a match being played between Ninja Gaiden cover athlete Ryu Hayabusa and fellow ninja Hayate. The game is in development for both the Xbox 360 and PS3, making this the first Dead or Alive game since DOA2 to be available on a Sony console. You can see the demonstration video below:

Tecmo also released this rather fetching (and wet) teaser image, showing what is speculated to be either Kasumi or Hitomi. The design seems to suggest a departure from the more pristine, plastic-looking visuals of previous games with more realistic looking skin and facial features.
Some keen-eyed viewers have actually pointed to evidence that this image is actually a composite image of two different characters, which you can see below. It's actually pretty clever.
I guess the big question is whether or not this game will be the one that restores DOA's reputation within the fighting game community. Dead or Alive 3 was met with some pretty rave reception in the fighting game community once it got patched, but the series has kind of simmered in the last few years, and the ridiculous volleyball spinoffs didn't exactly help its image. If Mortal Kombat can bounce back to glory after several years in the fighting game ghetto though, it's quite possible that Dead or Alive can as well. Team Ninja looks a bit different these days since series producer Tom Itagaki quit on bad terms a few years ago, but perhaps some fresh blood is what the franchise needs.
At any rate, it will be a while before we actually get to play it since the game is still in pre-alpha, and fighters tend to take a while to put out. I'll be keeping my eye on this one.
