Hasn't stopped record companies from continually jacking the price of their CD's through the roof even though the cost of mass producing and marketing them (including the recording and post-production fees) have dropped through the basement. It's an artificially inflated product.

jag

plus, let us not forget that the price of older products, such as all the beatles and led zep records cost almost the same as new records, when they are "super savers" they are like 11 dlls.

LOL **** that.:cmad:

Anyway, while I agree that piracy is wrong, I still think there are many benefits to it.

For example, me!

After "Daredevil" came out in the theaters in 2002, I instantly fell in love with Jennifer Garner. I had known for a while now that she was in this show called "Alias", and that it was supposed to be really good. I just never got around to watching it.

At the time there were no DVDs of it out yet, and the show was almost done with it's 2nd season, so the only way for me to check out this show risk-free and the only way for me to start at the beginning was to download it.

I downloaded the first two seasons. LOVED IT!

And because of downloading the first two seasons of "Alias", I ended up becoming a huge fan of the show, watching every episode on TV for the last 3 seasons, buying all 5 season DVD sets the day they came out, buying all the "Alias" magazines, etc. That's a ton of money that the show got as a result of me illegally downloading the show.

Even FURTHER...

Because of my love of "Alias", I made sure to tune into the new show "LOST" whenever news of the new JJ Abrams show first came up. I may never have checked out THAT show if it weren't for me loving Abrams from "Alias", which I discovered through illegal downloading. As far as "LOST" goes, I've watched every episode, bought both DVD sets (and will get every one after it) the day they came out, bought the "LOST" magazines, bought the "LOST" Todd Macfarlane figures, etc etc. Again, this is money and viewership that they gained from me that is indirectly a result of me illegally downloading "Alias".

And NOW I'm looking into just about everything JJ Abrams touches: "Mission Impossible 3" (I had had never watched anything MI until MI:3 came out on HD DVD), the new "Star Trek" movie (I've never seen anything Star Trek, but will definitely be checking this out...which may lead to another batch of revenue from me if it gets me into the ST universe), this new "Untitled JJ Abrams Movie", etc etc

So basically, I look at it this way. Sure pirating can definitely take potential money out of people's pockets who worked to get that song/movie created and put out there, but we never take a second to think about the GOOD that it does. People are much more prone to checking something out if they don't have to spend any money and risk that they won't like what they see. If they like what they see, perhaps they'll do like I do and go buy it?

There's a great bit of movies that I've bought, also, where I downloaded the movie first to make sure it warranted a buy. "The Prestige" and "What Dreams May Come" are two recent ones that come to mind quickly.

Piracy is like if your from a super religious family, and two chicks having start having sex infront of you and ask you to join in!
Sure is a sin against gods laws but man it's going to feel ohhh so good!
Piracy while not as satisfying sure helps when bills come around.
I do buy A LOT of dvds, games, and other items of ejoyment so a download here, and a download there really is harmless.
I mean I have actually bought dvds after i saw the bootlegs!
No joke I once skipped on watching a movie in theaters because I thought it looked dumb, and then like a year later I downloaded the bootleg, and bought the dvd 2 days after.
Now I even have a T Shirt that asks you to vote for Pedro, as well as other trinkets, and collectors stuff I've bought over the years.

So piracy can have a major upside two...

Yeah...you had me agreeing with you until I realized that you bought "Napoleon Dynamite" :oldrazz:

If piracy is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

Now are we talking about internet piracy or swashbuckling piracy? Of course piracy is wrong...how would you feel if something you invested tons of time and money in was being leached out across the internet to fat kids whose mother won't give them spending money.

With regard to the hypothetical- I'd go after the person that leaked it originally, which would probably be someone in the recording studio. I wouldn't waste my time with the people that downloaded it

I do it all the time. It is wrong and I'll admit it.

However a lot of the time when I do I feel no shame, because a lot of the stuff I pirate is unreleased Michael Jackson stuff, and I've bought every album he's ever made, and since he isn't releasing it anyways I'm not really hurting his wallet, and maybe I wouldn't have to do it, if he'd release a good album sometime this decade.

Some things I support. Other I don't

I download music (among other things...) all the time.
I don't give a f***!

I pirate comic books, but I buy like 80% of what I download. As far as music goes; the current state is so deplorable that the artists should pay me to have their song on my mp3 player :o

I know, current American music sucks.

Seriously. :o

But the fact is that you nor the program/person you download it from do no own the stuff you download. It is not yours. You are effectively stealing. While the black and white, it's against the law thing is stupid, stealing is always wrong.

I'm one of the few people I know who still buys CD's and Vinyl.

I don't think stealing entire albums from bands is right. Some bands really put a lot effort into their records; some "artists" hire big name producers with the sole intention of creating hit singles. Clearly, there are two sides of the business. During the late 90's, bands like The Backstreet boys -- bands that stretched the term "band" to its limits -- sold millions, and millions of records. Then Napster came into the picture.

It was long over-due, but it was bound to happen. It seems that record stores like Sam Goody, Tower Records, and The Warehouse have all vanished overnight. While I'm not a fan of downloading entire albums at a time, I think steaming song samples is a cool way to find out about music that interests you.

MP3's just don't have the cool package CD's and LP's have.

People need to start being honest with themselves and others.

You download songs because you're cheap. It has nothing to do with sticking it to the man, inalienable rights, corporate fat cats and sellout musicians. You're not Robin Hood, you're just cheap.

I'm cheap. But thankfully I don't care enough; I haven't bought a cd or downloaded a song in 2 years. Internet radio is all I need.
