While I appreciate your use of the word "correlation," I completely disagree with you. Yes there may be a rise in the cost of living/inflation and yes, this may balance out a percentage of the increase, however, CD's have doubled in price since the mid to late 90's from 10 to 20 bucks. So if this percentage you speak of is double then why has everything else not doubled due to inflation? A candy bar (here anyway) has gone from 50 cents to .69 cents. That's a 19 percent increase...not 100%. Movie tickets, here anyway, have gone up only a buck fifty. Thats not double. I could go on forever. Case in point... DOUBLE is not inflation. I think they should target the people producing the software and not the people downloading. Not to mention, if a CD didn't have at LEAST 3 songs on it that I liked...I didn't waste my money and the same holds true today. If I like three songs I'll buy it..in the mean time, my downloading one song from an artist isn't changing the way I spend my money at all. They never would have gotten it to begin with.

Are you certain about what it is you've decided to argue with me about? I was talking about the percentage of CD sales that the artists involved in the production of it actually receive in comparison with the suits who own most of the rights to that art (music, CD covers, etc.) through contractual dealings. It has not changed comparatively over the years. YOU are arguing about the inflated costs of CD's in comparison with other consumer goods which has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT! So....thanks for stopping by.

The title of this thread is just idiotic. Is it right to intentionally break the law because you can? Is it right to steal? Is it right to recieve stolen property for free? Is it right to take money from others? If you do it...you should be fined if not thrown in jail depending up the case. If you can't afford a movie ticket or a dvd then get a job and make some money. If you can't then maybe buying a pirated disk or downloading a film illegal isn't a good use of your time. If you're a kid and can't get a job then grow up.

I hope these people are in jail for a long long time.

Asia anti-piracy raids net 3.3 mil discsBy Jonathan Landreth

July 12, 2007

BEIJING -- More than 3.3 million illegally copied discs and 4,181 optical disc burners were seized during the recently completed Operation Tripod, a May-June anti-piracy sweep across Asia, the MPA said Wednesday.

The 1,303 anti-piracy raids, which took place across 12 countries and resulted in 874 arrests, represent an attempt to control the production, distribution and sales of pirated movies in Asia and halt their export, the MPA said in a statement.

In terms of sheer volume of goods confiscated, China led the list of nations targeted, with 1,187,456 pirated optical discs seized, the MPA said. The Philippines was next, with 738,551 discs seized.

Yet, just days after global boxoffice hit "Transfomers" opened in theaters across Asia, pirated copies of the film were found on the streets of Beijing for less than $1 per disc.

MPA estimates show that, of the $6.1 billion in potential studio revenue lost to pirated films in 2005, the Asia-Pacific region ranked as the second-worst offender at $1.2 billion. The U.S. topped the list with a tally of $1.3 billion.

"We plan to continue to conduct aggressive enforcement action throughout the year with our local police, customs and other agency partners, and will initiate another Operation Tripod-style anti-piracy push at the end of the year," Ellis said.

During the Tripod raids in Australia, law enforcement officials seized 2,504 optical disc burners, each capable of producing hundreds of millions of pirated optical discs in a single year, the MPA said.

In India, where 198 raids were conducted from May through June, 263,210 pirated optical discs were seized and 220 people were arrested.

The MPA did not say if any of the arrests associated with Tripod resulted in jail time or fines of any kind.

Malaysia conducted 180 raids in the same period, and authorities seized 246,700 pirated discs and arrested 192 people. Thai authorities conducted 318 raids, seizing 280,632 pirated discs and arresting 225 people.

So far 20 people say yes. But in my eyes they are wrong.

^ In the law's eyes they're all wrong and that's all that matters. It's a stupid argument. The law is the law. If it's agaist the law...it's wrong and not right. Period. Those that argue are more than likely guilty of stealing IP online by downloading films or buying bootleg dvd's. So of course they think it's right because it benefits them and takes future theatrical or dvd revenue away from studios. At the very least it takes eyeballs of the cable tv showings of that film.

Well, piracy IS wrong. BUT...so are consumer extortion, monopolistic business tactics, draconian user rights terms, media content fixing, payola schemes, contractual and financial screwing of artists, antiquated government supported business models and price fixing, which is basically what the entertainment industry has done. Two wrongs don't make a right by any means, but it's easy to see what pushes a lot of people who engage in piracy to do what they do.

No, It isn't right, but should it be punishible? Depends on the extent. I don't believe that downloading for personal use is worthy of jail, but if you were reselling, that may require some action.

^ If you dowload it free or not free you're supporting the industry of piracy. You're part of the problem and taking potential revenue from the studio. If you think that you're taking revenue from the studio because they wouldn't have gotten your money anyways...then don't F'N steal the product. Normally people don't steal things they don't want. If you want it you should pay for it. I don't think someone who downloads a film should be thrown in jail for the first offense. A fine hell yeah. Second offense...make it worse. 3rd offense...JAIL.

I don't download movies, I can't stand the dip i quality, but I do download music. When I do, usually it's to test drive it and then I buy the CD if I like it to support the artist. If I can onl afford one, I'll go to their concert or buy their merch because usually artists get a higher cut of that anyways.

I've got a question. I bought twelve episodes of The Office Season 3 on itunes, but I don't have an iPod, I have a cheap knockoff, so I couldn't put the videos on my MP3 player because of the copyright protection. So I downloaded some torrents of those episodes. iTunes didn't mention the copyright protection anywhere, and it was my first (and last) purchase from them. My question is, if I bought the episodes already, and will be buying them again in September when the DVD comes out, is that wrong? I paid for the things, I figure I should be able to do what I want with them (within the law, not sell them, or anything).

IMO, you did nothing wrong. You bought the episodes TWICE and downloaded a bakcup copy for you player. To me that qualifies as fair use.

yes fill the already full prison system with people who watch illegal movies, thats genius. they sure will survive that. and lets keep up the good work guys, dont bother with the drug dealers, take tax money and attack people watching "pirated" movies.

and when did the law define morals and right and wrong? news to me.

You know, I'm getting a little tired of the the black and white would that people like you keep projecting. This reminds me of the South Park episode where Lars is crying because he'll have to wait another week to afford his golden shark cage.

I don't care if you're getting a little tired. It is black and white except to those who break the law. Of course it's grey to them because what they think they're doing is ok because if benefits them. Yawn.

Some laws might be grey, but in this case it is black or white.

Yes, because the law is flawless and infallible. :whatever:

^ It's common sense J Alba's Lover. It's clear you have it as do most people. The rest...need to grow up.

Maybe...maybe not but it's the law. It's not up to a bunch of renegade children to decide what's right. Once you grow up you might be able to put yourself in the possession of convincing the Government that it's OK to steal someone's proprty for your own benefit and that there is no victim. Forget the the people who invested million if not hundreds of billions and countless days and months getting a project completed from it's inception to wrap. Yeah you should get it for free because you are important. LOL

What a moronic comparison. Shows the mentality of the people who think that wrong is right. LOL BTW what would happen to you if you broke that law? You're be cooked. Also look what happened to that regime. The people of the World rose up against it as a united power. It wasn't a handful of zit faced jobless kids downloading illegal movies on their moms computer.

Yeah I'm a sheep because I don't steal other peoples property. And the major studios, directors, grips, stuntment, producers, and actors are the equivelant of Hitler and his Reign of Terror. Yeah that makes sense. You come across like the typical college student who has no experience in life whatsoever, has no responsibilities, and has yet to actually earn a living to make him/herself independent. If you made one of these films or invested money you wouldn't be so happy about people stealing it. It's considering "THEFT" across the Globe. It's a Universal acceptance that stealing is wrong. I'm done with you. Ignored.

If I make a movie or an album or a videogame, then I might care.

Until then, I'll continue to download music, roms, and the episodes of Family Guy that I missed because of work, so's I can get caught up for the next season even though I'll buy the DVD set when it comes out.

Downloading TV can't be wrong really. It's like you forgot to tape it went into work and a friend has taped it for you. That's the only think I'm really ok with. As long as you watch it on TV too and/or buy the DVDs.
