Is the internet and technology driving humanity apart?

I dunno... the internet's got its good and bad side. It can help social interaction by increasing contacts through that messenger stuff etc... It can inhibit it by becoming a central point for all social contact because it's a easier place to do it. Especially in busy cities, people DON'T socialize because they're simply scared of each other. I'm a New yorker and especially after 9/11 people are just stuck in their own bubble really on the train or wherever because we're (and I'm honestly am too whenever I go on the train) scared of some of the people on there. Whattcha gonna do? I got mugged once so you know, I don't think I'm being completely irrational about it...

I also think personally time constraints and work pressure is a bigger factor in people's social problems. There's just so much pressure now to multi task and stuff that it's hard not to become isolated when you're working hard on personal achievements in school or whatever.

I have yet to visit a porn site... I don't find watching fascinating, I prefer doing. ;)

To stop people like me from visiting the internet they would have to get rid of game sites, message boards and chat rooms - I'm not sure what would be left if they did that.

I can't wait for Summer to come. That'll get me away from this damn thing.

That he once shot an elephant in his pajamas?
yes, exactly.
I think like anything the internet drives people away who wish to find comfort in it and get driven away.

There are plenty of people who find it hard to get on with life but stick it out anyway and don't have this as a cushion and either get on well or find other things to separate themselves from other people

gaming, book reading, modelling, solo hobbies, etc...

so as apoose to saying the internet and technology drives humantity apart,

i would rather say...

the internet and technology is another tool that can aid drive an individual apart from the rest of humanity.

but anything in an obsessive amount could do that. Unfortunately the internet has become so multi-useful that it is hard for one to see it as obssessive because you simply aren't (or shouldn't be (unless you are on the hype))) doing the same thing on it all day and all night.

I don't understand how you came to this conclusion.

The internet is definitely destroying interactive and communicative skills. You no longer need to go to the library, you no longer need to go over to a friends house to play video games, frivolous lawsuits are also detroying our youths. You can't even play tag anymore and get a cut on your knee without a parent wanting to sue the school, the city and the state. Kids don't even play outside anymore because of video games, and we wonder why as a society kids are obese.

If you feel that way you can toss your computer in the dumpster and go join an Amish community. Also, libraries are fading out due to amazon and downloadable books. Technology is a ***** isn’t it?

also, let me say, my concern isnt exclusive to violent acts that may come of a result from internet seclusion. i think the greater problem is that this internet oriented society is going to escalate over the years, and as a result humanity is gonna become more and more detached from eachother.

The media gets too much credit for violence, if everyone that played Doom or listened to Rammstein turned into mass murderers we’d be ****ed.

There were sick people back in the days of olde, just as there are now. They went on killing sprees, same as now. We just feel the need to figure out why they were the way they were nowadays, when back then they just knew they were ****ed in the head.

No.Technology and the internet is not driving humanity appart..but it is consuming it.We are now seeing a generation of American boys who are loners, and dont have girlfriends. How could they get rid of this frustration? No one knows..a similar thing is happening in the United Kingdom. Why?Humanity is now dependant on the internet, the west is being overtaken.

well shy people tend to get cut off from groups naturally but some reinforce this aspect by hiding behind something else that requires them to be isolated and thus gives them a reason to be isolated rather than the feeling of rejection.

voila

That's not exclusively the internet's fault. Many kids just don't want to get into the drama they see their parents getting into in their relationships, going through all the divorce and stuff. Sad but true. That's why there's all that "friends with benefits" business happening.

Where is this business happening? I didn't get the memo... :(

Yes.
Plainly.

Which is why I'm going to a giant square dance with 300 people on Saturday night. It's going to rule. Fiddle music, sweaty dancers, pot luck. Stuff good times are made of .

I don't really think it is. Some people fall into the trappings of doing nothing but sit on the internet when they should be going out and doing stuff, but I'd wager those people would be sitting inside doing nothing some other way if technology wasn't like this. On the plus side, the internet allows you to talk to people you wouldn't ever even know existed. Even if you never meet them, you still share ideas and such, which is better than nothing. Some things need moderation, and variety.
