Is 'the martian' the best space film of the most recent crop?

What has been the best space film in the last few years?

  • The Martian

  • Interstellar

  • Gravity

  • Sunshine

  • Something else

  • Star Wars: the phantom menace (please go see a doctor, I'm worried for you)

Just for fun by recent I mean from about the last fifteen years.

Anyway I would definitely say yes.

1. It was unashamedly pro science
2. It didn't feel the need to ram in a tacky love story for no reason
3. Matt Damon's abs are very nice
4. It had disco which makes it the best film ever.

What do you think?

lol voted Interstellar before reading all the choices. Had a moment of panic when i realized Sunshine was on your list (love that movie). But I'll stand by it. Nolan rocked that one.

Moon (2009) was also really really good.

And as a side note, check out Europa Report (2013) if you liked all these movies.

Yes! Best movie of 2015! And I enjoyed it more than Gravity, Interstellar, Sunshine, Lost in Space, Star Trek and the other films set in space/different planet.

I'd like to rewatch a lot of the movies you listed, but "The Martian" is my current favorite of the bunch.

For me, "Martian" was undoubtedly great, and if that's too big a compliment it's for sure so damn entertaining. It felt like Soderbergh's "Ocean's" series in space -- it didn't take itself too seriously, and it stands as a great example of a movie that can genuinely engage you without trying to lay on tropes it could really do without.

Really liked all 4 movies, Moon was great as well, but Interstellar just had that something extra which puts it above the others for me.

I probably hold Interstellar and Moon higher, but The Martian was not far off. Really great movie.

I thought that "Moon" was really a great SciFi movie without big budget, since that is not an option in this poll... I would go with Interstellar.

The Martian was good but not great. My ratings

(Moon) > Interstellar > The Martian > Gravity > Sunshine > (Solaris)

I saw The Martian last week, at times i forgot he was on Mars - for some reason, ignorance i guess, i assumed Mars would have cruel conditions. It felt like he was down in the Grand Canyon.

I laughed out loud at moments, tutted at a few that i felt were unrealistic but over all i loved the tone, i loved how they embraced science or at least didn't down play it.

I actually forgot it was a R Scott movie.

My only nitpick, is wished they delved into the more psychological aspect of being alone on mars for 2 years - it didn't need to go dark or deep, just show you how it would effect someone - maybe they did and i just didn't pick up on it.

It was enjoyable. 7/10

The Martian, Interstellar, Sunshine, Gravity, Serenity, and Moon should be apart of a space fan's movie marathon on a sick day. All are fantastic films.

I haven't seen Moon and wasn't that wowed by Gravity.

I like The Martian and Interstellar, but Interstellar is more powerful to me. The Martian is more straightforwardly entertaining though.

I would personally choose Interstellar, as that is the movie that moved me the most.

But if we are talking pure cinematic mastery, then nothing in that list comes close to Gravity. Cuaron did some breathtakingly visionary work.

One thing is for sure,
The Martian is the best film ever made about an Astronaut stranded on Mars .

The Martian, Interstellar, Sunshine, Gravity, Serenity, and Moon should be apart of a space fan's movie marathon on a sick day. All are fantastic films.
Yay to the shoutout for Serenity!
A highly underrated film.

Moon > Sunshine = Europa Report > The Martian = Gravity > Interstellar.

Martian, Moon, Gravity, Interstellar, Europa. Sunshine isn't really a space film for me, more of a horror.

For me, yes. It just had the right mix of everything.

Martian
Moon
Sunshine
Gravity
Interstellar

I probably should rate Sunshine higher than Moon but Rockwell's performance just made me like it a bit more. Gravity and Interstellar are almost tied. Both have their highs and lows.

I really enjoyed it, but all the others on this list (AND Moon) resonated with me more. Well, aside from The Phantom Menace, lol.

Need to see Interstellar again, and haven't seen the rest apart from The Martian. Can't tell really.

1) The Martian
2) Gravity
3) Interstellar

I need to rewatch Moon and I've never seen Sunshine so this is my list for now.

Interstellar is one of my favorites. Although Martian and Moon are brilliant films

I liked The Martian a little bit more than Interstellar. They are very different films though. However, Interstellar, with its incredible score and visuals, moved me emotionally more than The Martian did. I just think The Martian was the better movie, by just a few notches.

Damn! So sad I forgot to include moon. I had every intention of doing that and then I forgot
