It has been hyped as a prequel, yet Judi Dench is there(and shes the "new" M), the Aston Martin looks more modern than any other car before. Are there just a few scenes with him getting his "00" status? What do you think?

CASINO ROYALE is best explained as a retcon (see retcon) or a reboot (see reboot). Either way, it presents a break with the previous continuity and somewhat rewrites Bond history.

Many things happen to contradict the previous continuity:
-Bond gains his Double-O license in a clearly modern time period (there are references to the Cold War being in the past, as well as brief references to 9/11 and the Gulf War)
-Bond meets Felix Leiter for the first time in CASINO ROYALE (whereas DR. NO claimed to be his first encounter with Leiter)
-Bond gains the Aston Martin DB5 for the first time in CASINO ROYALE (whereas Bond previously gained the Aston Martin DB5 in GOLDFINGER)

That said, many have suggested (myself included) that there is no real, honest continuity in the Bond films, and that any attempts to prove there is is nothing but fanwankery. Any attempts at establishing a Bond "history" is tenuous at best - there's little consistency in the franchise.

Think Batman Begins, only with James Bond.

You could take it as a prequel if, like me, you don't care about continuity problems.

I personnally consider it as a prequel with retcon. But as Agentsand77 said, there was litle continuity in the franchise to begin with. I just hope they keep him a widower in subsequent films.

Fanwankery lol

I kinda wish that the retcons made in Casino Royale weren't so blatant. As in, I'd prefer we had another M, and I wish that this wasn't going to be James' "first" meeting with Felix.

But as those above me have said, there is little continuity to be upheld to begin with. However, there are several points in Bond's history that I would prefer to, at least loosely, stay in his history (ie: the things I listed above, Blofeld, and Bond's marriage to Tessa).

Make a prequel to Dr No. Then set it in the present day. Throw in Judi Dench as M as something familiar for viewers. That's Casino Royale.

This movie is not a prequel. The studio has said it has absolutely no continuity with the other James Bond movies. Pretty much, according to EON, the old films never existed as far as new Bond movies are concerned

Bond is british. British people always have bad teeth. Pip, pip. Cheerio. Moo.
