Each media feeds off the other. The Fleischer's had Superman fly. The radio show added Kryptonite. Film, television, and radio take from the comics and inversely, comics take from other media. They feed each other and allow the character to grow.

At which point, they try something new. That's the point. The comics are full of events that shake up the status quo every few years or so. Some are just better received than others.

Makes me wonder about smallville... well It usually returns to its roots... before becoming unrecognizable like catwoman.

I don't know why they want to add so many new things unnecessarily sometimes. Maybe they're gimmicks of the time, but whatever they are usually the basic design for the costume returns to normal.
