At least that's what Trank is claiming. And no, he doesn't mean it'll be a prequel to anything pre-existing. He's saying this will be the road to them becoming the Fantastic Four we're all familiar with. So it's a prequel to something that doesn't exist.

This is after months of the cast and crew saying, "Don't expect the comics, gritty, realistic, gritty, we were told not to read the comics, gritty, no silly costumes, and gritty."

This is also the same eleventh hour marketing strategy that Dragonball Evolution tried by saying, "The sequel will be closer to the source material. So please pay and endure the crappy movie we made despite nobody wanting to see it and we'll make it up to you next film."

Gritty.

That just left me scratching my head. If you tell the origin first, it's an origin. If you tell the origin in film 2 or 3 or 4, etc. it's a prequel. It's not a difficult concept.

Calling it a prequel to something that doesn't exist is just one more bizarre thing in a long list of bizarre things.

What a load of crap. No one is going to buy that and even if it was true, that's not how films should be done, especially adaptations.

Not so much bizarre as desperation. People don't want to see their movie, so they're saying whatever they can to change our minds.

It was them saying, "We know this isn't what you asked for, but we're determined to make that sequel anyway. Maybe that one will be a little better."

So if this is a prequel to an imaginary film, I think I'll make my imaginary director of that imaginary film Ridley Scott.

And there's an imaginary scene in my imaginary film in which The Thing runs into a really annoying guy named Trosh Jank and beats the snot out of him.:woot:

In my imaginary film, imaginary James Gunn directs (imaginary James Gunn is great at juggling this and Guardians, yo), Thing plays poker and wins the pants off a loser that runs out of cash (played by Simon Kinberg), a major movie studio crumbles to nothing after Mole Man (not Suit Man) attacks LA, and Lockjaw tears up a washed up directors home.

I really have to wonder, who thinks this is a good idea? Is there any evidence that this kind of last minute 180 produces good results, ever?

He probably means it as another word for Origin. In the origin they become a team and family and become powered, but in the sequel they are like that from the start so this is a prequel to that sequel.

For instance you could call TFA an origin for Captain America and a prequel to The Avengers. And you could call this an introduction and origin of Mr Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing and Human Torch and a prequel to them as a full fledged super team, which they'll become at by the end of this but won't be right from the start

Prequel is just a buzzword.

This is clearly the early days of The Four, and they've been saying since the beginning that they will not resemble the Fantastic Four we know until later on.

How is this not obvious by this point?

It's not backpedaling.

It's pointing out the obvious.

It IS backpedaling in the sense that they're contradicting earlier statements that were made till fairly recently. For months all the movie's selling points were everything that it won't be. Up to and including Jordan making fun of the costumes, then another announcement saying we most likely will see them in the final product. Along with the other quotes I paraphrased in the first post.

I also suppose the words "hacker" and "blogger" are just buzzwords and Doom will be a dictator of an Eastern European country.

Umm, no one has said "expect the comics" or "We'll make it up to you in the sequel". All that's been said is what has been obvious from the word go. This is a story about the origins and early days of this version of the Fantastic Four, and it was designed to be new and different.

Toby Kebbell gave a brief interview and basically implied that his characterization in the film doesn't preclude some of the classic elements of Doom. It wasn't an official release or statement.

Are you serious? A prequel? Amazing.

And the spin has already begun from people not at all involved in the movie in any way!

"Oh he didn't MEAN prequel, he REALLYYYY meant origin! He's just a complete moron who doesn't know what words mean."

...Yet. The sequel is planned so this is the prequel to the planned sequel. Not that hard to understand.

Trank never stated "this isn't a prequel" so he isn't contradicting anything by calling it a prequel

Jordan doesn't get to decide what costumes they wear. Nor is his making fun of them him saying 'they aren't ever going to be there' which is the only thing that would contradict the latter announcement

Oh, I get it so every movie that gets a sequel the former film then becomes a prequel.? So this FF is a film that became a prequel when the sequel date was announced.. Never new that is how it works..:loco:

There was a whole load of **** coming from Trank on that panel. It was ridiculous. Also speaking of the sequel, why wasn't there a banner of it like there was for the rest of the Fox Marvel films?

Oh. My. God.

The crappy Tranktastic FF will use the Negative Zone to travel to an alternate dimension where there was a faithful FF film that was made that the fans loved and made a ton of money.

Prequel, precursor, origin whatever you want to call it basically leads to the same thing we knew we were getting along time ago so there's not much point in making a big deal about it.

Prequel has gained an accepted meaning beyond "an actual prequel to a franchise".
