It's summer, and my school is sending homework through the mail?!!!

they say "requiremed reading"...
:cwink:

teachers just mark it as extra cred

The only thing teachers cared about was those 30 mins of reading everyday cause that was like a little break for them.

That's an outrage! The world is ending!
My school sent a package with a book and worksheet for some Summer Reading crap. They want it done by the time school starts in August.
?!!
I read enough. I hate it when they think that NO ONE reads anymore when alot of people do.

I read comics, novels, stuff online (like the Hype), game guides, etc.

I hate being forced to read stuff. I know it'll happen in school, and I'll deal with it...but during the summer? Hell no!

:cmad::down

Uhh....what grade are you in? Every school I've ever heard of assigns summer reading up until college

Well I am going to a new school this year. My school before it didn't do it.

My brother who was there a couple years ago never got this crap though. They're just now trying this.

We always had summer reading in school.

**** it, man. It's your summer. Do whatever you want to do. I got something to do over break but I probably won't do it like everyone else.

See, you guys without summer reading are missing the fun of reading Farewell to Arms, My Antonia, and Grapes of Wrath and doing 2 essays for each. And you don't even start reading until 4 days before school starts. And only doing this at night, since you have to spend all day learning a marching band show. That's what I did going into sophmore year. I don't see how reading Lord of the Flies and doing a packet is that big an intrusion on one's summer.

If by "soon" you mean "in a few thousand years" then yes.

use it for toilet paper, and turn it in

I'm really surprised at the responses to this thread. I've had at least one book assigned to read every summer since 5th grade and never once did I hear anyone say that it was outrageous for the school to assign summer work like that. It's just one book! Even if it was something deathly boring and terribly written, it really wouldn't be that much to ask. Hell, I've read 8 books already this summer without anyone telling me I had to. Besides, Lord of the Flies is a fantastic book. If someone sent me a copy in the mail I'd love it. I highly doubt the school assigned a book as significant as Lord of the Flies just to be sure that everyone is reading something. Believe it or not, you can read a work of fiction and <gasp!> learn something from it.

Chances are, you will get more from Lord of the Flies than you will from 99% of the comics you will read in your entire life. Don't pass it up just because someone told you to read it.

Reply back.

Your school sucks.

For my AP english class we have to go on Discussion Board and talk about The Life of Pi. Yes, it does damper my summer of my Junior year :(

The summer prior to my senior year in high school, I had to read 200 pages of a history book (which turned out to be slightly enjoyable), and Moby Dick in its entirety.

I had to write a book report on Moby Dick. It was eleven. ****ing. Pages.

My point: **** and quit complaining. It'll do you good. Comic books =/= literature.

Someone told that the guy doesn't get to whale till like the last 3 chapters. And the whole book was on how to kill a whale, and boating. :( I'm sorry to hear you had to write about that.

Just say the package never came. It got lost in the mail.

nice  . thats the first thing that came to my mind as well. act as if you never heard of such a package either, b/c if you say you knew about it they'll get on your case for not calling the district to get another sent to you. and be sure to burn the package before all this.

whats the big deal, my school and college gave stuff like this to us all the time, stop your *****ing, the worse i had was a piece where i had to fill 4 sketch books two on traditional art and two on my own personal choice of style

Send the homework assignment back with a thank you letter that says you won't have time for this assignment because you are enjoying your summer and maybe next year.

I just wouldnt do it, i got given homework in summer before but it was going to add to my final grade. I only did the core ones like maths, english and science, the rest i said f**k that off

Man, Summer is for students to relax for a couple of months so they don't get burnt out from all the work durring the school year, but NOT to do more assignments. Is it that hard to squeeze in reading a book during the school year that they need to do it in the summer? What gives?
it's a fact, people need to read more, and not only comic books and websites

Its not an issue of how long it is, or how little effort is put in. It is about the persumputious nature of a public school to think they have that kind of authority over someone else's child.
if you have a problem with it, you can always home school your kid

and then feed him twinkies and beer all day if you want to

We shouldn't ever have to do work over the summer when it involves school. That's ******ed.

And my bro didn't tell me which version he saw, Catman.
in real life, work doesn't stop for the summer

it's called "improvement"

I honestly wish my school had assigned more reading tasks for me during the summer, yes I would have complained, but all that information lasts forever
