J.K. Rowling sues to block unauthorized Harry Potter book

This gives me an idea.

We should publish a book using material from the SHH forums!

Superhero character histories and debate from the hero boards and political commentary, religious debate and general witticisms from Community. I smell NY Times bestseller list!
I'd hit it. I mean... buy it. :ninja:

I've never liked JK Rowling just because I feel like all the attention went to her head ya know?

How did it go to her head? She's certainly earned her success.

If anyone should write a reference guide to her own books, it should be her. Not a fan who's lifting material directly out of her work without her permission. In court she even quoted a translation of one of the spells in this book that was actually wrong.

I think she has the right to protect her own work.

Having read most of the books, give or take one or two, I'd have to agree with Aristotle - while I did enjoy them for what they were, there's no real attempts at subtext or metaphor, and the only ones 'surprised' by Rowling's plot 'twists' are, well - they're the kind of twists that you can expect, if you get what I'm saying.

Anyone who uses the argument 'well, it's a book for children' gets clubbed with a copy of "Watership Down - " probably not the best example, I've just realized.

Having said all that, I can see both sides of this - that Rowling couldn't have reached some sort of business compromise with the author, whoever he was, is kind of odd. What, is it going to 'compromise the integrity of her work?' Yeesh.

Order of the Phoenix is yellow and orange with a phoenix on the cover. That was the one I was reading that day.

Actually there are 2 different UK covers for all of the Harry potter books except The Philosophers stone which has three.:o

Well it would, if the information in the lexicon is wrong. She pointed out an error in her testimony regarding the translation of one of the spells. It also doesn't help that she's planning her own reference book in the next few years and can't be too happy to see any unauthorized versions taking anything away from what she's planning.

I think it's ultimately going to settle in some sort of compromise between both parties.

Cool...I'll have to check that out when I'm in London this fall. I still need to get the UK version of Deathly Hallows. :yay:

Judge Urges Rowling To Settle Out Of Court

A judge overseeing the legal battle between Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix author J.K. Rowling and superfan Steven Vander Ark has advised the pair to settle the dispute out of court. Judge Robert Patterson urged the two parties to take their legal fight outside the courtroom, claiming the case would almost certainly end in years of appeals because it involves many unresolved areas of U.S. law. The British writer sued Michigan, Detroit-based RDR Books for copyright infringement in 2007, in a bid to prevent the publication of Vander Ark's The Harry Potter Lexicon, which was allegedly inspired by her novels. Rowling has so far managed to stall the publication of the 400-page text, which was initially intended for release last November. But the judge deems the case too complicated to be dealt with in court, telling the hearing on the third day of the battle in a U.S. District Court in New York, "I think this case, with imagination, could be settled." The first two days of the hearing, which started on Monday, has seen emotional testimonies from both Rowling and Vander Ark. The case continues.

That guy is a f**king tool. Harry Potter is Rowling's crappy property, he shouldn't have even written the book.

If he was so confused, I'm sure he could have found plenty of 8-year-olds to help him understand it. :whatever:

if we're being honest the first book is utter pish. i honestly found it impossible to read due it the fact it was so poorly written...then i gave up, watched the movie and discovered the entire concept was pish...

anyhow, she should move on, there are lots of guides written to series of books not by the origonal autor, sometimes a fans outlook is better
